There is another CD with poems by Sappho. She sings them with Angelique Ionatos.

Obviously Minos Matsas is not Manos Hatzidakis: Matsas admits (at least indirectly) when he uses the works of other composers.Hi hi....

Thank you for your answer Geeske. I'd be delighted to hear some of those songs by him one day. I spent a lot of time trying to understand them a long time ago. I was 16 or 17 then, learning Greek and admiring The poetry of Ritsos, the music of Mikis and the voice of Bithikotsis, not to speak of the way Chiotis played the bouzouki...

There is a great 1968 version of it by Nana Mouskouri in a double LP which has not been made into a CD yet although a friend of mine did it with sophisticated devices... The LP is called "UNE SOIREE AVEC NANA MOUSKOURI ET LES ATHENIENS" That was when the girl still had a voice AND a repertoire....

Isn't it the famous "Yalo yalo"? (eis ton afro ths thalassas, h agaph mou koimatai). I am not quite sure, but I think it is this one.
Irene Papas.... I saw her once at the Irodio.... What a woman. Great actress, but she can't sing!!!!

The original "Epitafios" was sung by Nana Mouskouri a few month before the extraordinary version by Bithikotsis and Chiotis at the bouzouki. It is said that Sotiria Bellou should have sung the original, but due to her numerous stays at the hospital, she couldn't do it. Do you have comments about this song cycle, and has Dalaras sung any of the 8 songs?

One of the greatest Greek composers ever, together with Hadjidakis and Tsitsanis.
-
Do you mean Τη ρωμιοσύνη μην την κλαις? He has already sang it!It's in the album Τα 18 λιανοτράγουδα της πικρής πατρίδας (1974)
Earlier than that, by Farantouri and Pandis... and "Τη ρωμιοσύνη μην την κλαις" sung by the composer himself, of course... I much prefer the version to the Dalaras one which has too much noise in the bouzoukia and drums!!!!

Great great interpretation by Prodromos Tsaousakis....

Of course I understand that there are some traditional microtone-scales that are used in much traditional music played on instruments such as the lira, outi, saz, nei etc. that can play those scales, but a bouzouki, for example can not play anything but "western" scales, if it is not custom made. But the tunings are surely the same for many, many songs.Do not forget either that a "normal" bouzouki (the bouzouki is not only a Greek instrument), does not always have separations for the notes, so it is just like the "outi" (the 'oud)....
-
Of course, there are similarities, but any musician here will tell you that the differences are more numerous and that Greek music cannot be listened to like any European music and most of all cannot be played the same way. The most obvious examples being dimotika and rebetika. I play the bouzouki, and the tunes are not the same. I played the "clarino" for some years, but It was impossible for me to play the dimotika tunes that I used to listen to from the Greek radio. Even some of the "easiest" Theodorakis songs are real puzzles or brainteasers for good bouzouki players.
And about Dalaras, he doesn't have a European way of singing. After all, apart from the European Community, Greece is NOT a European country, as most of us have noticed.... When I am in Greece, I am not in Europe!!!! I do not have the feeling that I am in Europe.....

:music: He has an unbelievably good memory actually.
Such Eastern singers do have an unbelievable memory!!!! The memory of songs is almost immortal, and I know what I am talking about!!!

Do you mean Τη ρωμιοσύνη μην την κλαις? He has already sang it!Better sung by Theodorakis himself anyway.... First recording on the French television in 1972 or 1973 (I can remember my parents and myself listening to him passionately!!!!).... Second recording by Mikis in London, same year.... Dalaras only recorded it in 1974 in Athens. I bought the record and was criticized for it, bu some of the songs are beautiful by Dalaras.
