Well in Den Haag he was wearing the black jeans and white shirt and I remember thinking then that he seemed to be always wearing that, and that it suited him real well... As fort vests, they happen to qualify as my favourite article of clothing - wether I wear them, make them, design them, or foist them on all my friends... So: can't we convince Dalaras to go back to wearing them?

As I said in the other thread, my favourite since last saturday week has been O Metoikos, which keeps ringing in my ears in a weird mixture of the campfire-side version we sang when I was a kid, the grumbly French of Moustaki, and Dalaras' wonderful singing on the record. Work on a translation is in progress and I'm also hunting for the French lyrics [sarantis, wouldn't it be fun to learn those? }

Well Dalaras didn't write it, Manos Xydous did - but Dalaras did compose the music. It is a good song, I love it too. One the homesick songs... -
A few comments... - About the 'sun' and 'envelope' thing: they seem to me to work well enough. But I think the 'mark postings as read' does not always work, I sometimes have to click it two or three times before 'the sun goes out'. - About the messenger: please DON'T remove it or anything!!! I find it not only great fun, but also massively useful!! The 'friends' feature: I haven't yet looked what it's for - About guests posting: why should they? If they have something to say, they can register, can't they? I suppose they can un-register as well, so.. - Forum jump: I never use it. To move around the forums, I like using the club "tree" at the top of the page. My main problem is with the fonts. But I do not know wether that is because of my computer and its settings, or because of the way the site is made. Anyway the latin alfabet I get is merely ugly, but the Greek font is very hard to read - which is a BIG problem for me. .

I really hope Dalaras does not look at these things, or not too much. It would be a waste of time at best, and, I should think, quite embarrassing!!! To mean so much to so many people one had never met and will never meet, how is a a person to cope with that? Some stop being human and become 'stars', which Dalaras, thank heaven, never has. So he must be able to sort of ignore it. Does he read English at all, Sarantis? -

DID Dalaras ever sing with Moustaki? It's weird, all these years I've like Moustaki as a French 'chansonier', never realizing he was really Greek!
-
This week's favourite song is O METHIKOS. I bought the record a week ago, put it on... the first bars of the song sounded... and I knew it! Instantly! When I was a child, we used to sing it by the campfires, in the french version by Moustaki. I used to love it then and still know most of the french lyrics by heart. And all this time I never realized it was a real Greek song first!

WOW! Just back from a week among Vikings and, as predicted, suffering from Dalaras starvation... and here are all these wonderful stories... I've got an episode to add to mine, a rather funny one which I hope you will enjoy: When I left for Denmark last Saturday, I took the opportunity to go via Amsterdam - I get to go there only rarely and there is a shop there specializing in Greek books and music. So there I was, my heart thumping with expectation, my shopping list clutched in my hand... I was SO glad I had asked around and made that list, or I would NEVER have managed to choose anything. As it was I bought O methikos and Hymnos angelon se rythmous anthropon, which were on the list, and the Misa Criolla, which was not then I left an order for the rest of the list. Then I got some more books to study greek from. At last I left the shop and went back to my van, which was parked nearby on a corner by a coffee-shop. It was a horrible grey day, dark clouds hanging low over the ugly red brick buildings... but I felt flooded with private sunshine. As I climbed into the van I realized that I could not wait any longer. I had to hear! So I dug out the discman, put on O methikos, lit a cigarette, and sat there, leaning on the wheel, listening. A one point I looked up, and there was this policeman standing in front of the van looking at me in a funny way. I realized then how I must look! My van is a 27 year old VW van, your typical hippie vehicle (with the little round headlights that look like eyes - we call the van 'Oogjes', that's 'Matakia' in Greek). My headphones were hidden in my hair, and I was parked in front of an Amsterdam coffee-shop, and sat there smoking, with a happy, no, an utterly blissful grin on my face... so the obvious explanation was that I must be sky-high on something! And I was, of course So he came and inquired wether I was all right. I told him I was... just very very happy... Amsterdam policemen are cool, he just checked my tobacco, believed me and went away again.

The Ultimate Collection 8. I asfaltos pou trehei 9. Missa Criolla 10 Live and unplugged 11 The Xarcharkos concert with Galani 12 Live recordings (the 1988 one) 13 Live at Iera Odos II 14 Kalymera Kyria Lydia 15 Mi milas kindinevi Ellas 16 Latin 17 George Dalaras - the Greek Voice Having bought more than I could afford, I went on to order another three CD's... soon my list will change again!

Hi folks, I'm back from a week among the Vikings - great week it was, but I MISSED you! I is sooo good to catch up on these pages and pages of posts!! I loved the 'socks' story... Am I right in thinking that Dalaras does not worry very much about clothing, fashion, etc... - "if it's tidy and unobtrusive, it's good enough" - that kind of attitude? He'd be right of course - to a personnality like his, no kind of dressing up can add anything!
-
For want of facts to contribute, I'll put in a question: When did he change his name, and does anyone know why?
-
Loads of people love Dalaras without understanding a word he sings. I know, I used to do it all the time and still do it often. But is better to know the meaning! I have a small hoard of translations culled from CD-booklets and concert programmes. I'm more than willing to share them if anyone wants them. If that won't get Nikolas in trouble over copyrights. Worth the trouble? And is anyone else willing to help?
-
Well, since you're so kind, I'll just go on taking advandage, and here's my next mystery... I am the happy (very happy) owner of a copy of "To Elliniko prosopo tou Giorgiou Dalara". This CD starts, to my enduring delight, with a short spoken statement in which Dalaras introduces the concert. After listening to it a few thousand times, I *think* I can make out that he is speaking of a concert programme exploring two tracks: one 'to laiko, to dimotico" and the other 'to neo Elliniko tragoudi' Now as to the first, Michael has just explained to me that laiko and dimotico are related, but not the same (did I get that right?) and for the second, I can translate it as 'new greek song' but that doesn't tell me very much. Can someone un-confuse me a bit further? ( You've got a quiet week ahead to do it in, since I'm going to be away till the 31st.)
-
Chris I do believe you are cheating I promise you my selection will change next time I post here - I'm going Dalaras-SHOPPING this afternoon, with the list you all helped me compile - and for which I thank you very much!
-
A dirty mind is joy forever, but I DO apologize for bringing it up. It was rude and I shouldn't have done it. Chris, where in the world did YOU pick up such a vocabulary (no pun intended )??
-
Anna warst du dass, ausserhalb des Bahnhofs?
-
Well his private life is d-n well his own!!! And none of our f-n business!!!! (Sorry, I was kinda shocked...) To catch onto a more interesting point, isn't it the case that Dalaras has started many of Greek artists in their careers?
-
Christo, it helps a lot, thank you! Yes I know exactly which "Thartho na se 'vro" you mean - I was playing my Attikon tape on the way over so I was listening it just half an hour ago! I have a live version somewhere of 'mana mou Ellas' (I think from the concert with Galani) which has always fascinated me because of the "amane" - it's so powerfull!!!
-
Let me just say that about the only thing in the world I can think that would induce me to watch the opening or finale of the Olympic Games, would be Dalaras' participation. I'm not sure I know Yanni, but I know I can't of anything I'd like better than some new Theodorakis songs!! He is a great man. Shouldn't there be a female vocalist in this as well? Who would you pick? Christo, about how I became a Dalaras fan - see the new topic! It's funny you should ask, on my way over I was thinking of asking you guys the same question.
-
At the risk of offending a lot of people I will say that I think the modern Olympic Games are a sick-making commercial circus and that Dalaras is FAR too good for them!!! But I'm too weak-minded to object if he does the ceremony because then I will get to see him on TV!!! And lots of other people too might discover what they missed all these years.
-
Wow, it's going to be suddenly very quiet in the club, I'm going away tomorrow - until the 30th...
-
Oh guys... I DO HOPE none of you are aware of the meaning of 'pick' in Dutch. Well we spell it 'pik' but... *BLUSH* What kind of museum is this Dalaras museum? Glass cases, a hushed atmosphere, a sky-high entry fee? And sensors that go BEEP if you lean to close??
-
Well, do you think there is a chance he might? I'll tell you why I wondered about this: because suddenly in the middle of a song Dalaras reminded me of Jacques Brel (an old childhood favourite of mine). Dalaras has the better voice and is a much more complete musician, but here is a... well, something that reminded me.

Chris, what a tease you are! Why don't you give us some useless information instead - like what you did with *the* guitar pick - put in on a chain round your neck? framed it to hang on the wall? buried it in the deepest safe deposit box of a swiss bank?
