Posted July 18, 2003 · Report post As promised, I will start to post the (as yet unfinished) translation of this interview. I'm going to post it in small bits, and put in the greek first and then the translation. Why? Because most of you who want the translation know at least some greek and reading with a crib is (in my experience) a good way of learning. Also, (egoist that I am) I hope to tempt some of you who don't need the translation into reading it anyway and telling me where I went wrong. The damm thing is really difficult, and I need all the help I can get. Btw., someone asked what those [ ] are that I use. They are a translator's convention to mark words that are only implicit in the original, but explicit in the translation, or to mark a note or explanation added by the translator and not present in the original. Giorgos Dalaras talks to Thanassis Lalas He may take off from a [musical] note, and take you all the way to ... America. He may start from a rembetico and end up with ... Kostas Simitis. He may also annoy some people, as he has made up his mind to call things by their name. In our meeting, too, that is the way Giorgos Dalaras speaks of things: naming them clearly. Being especially troubled with all that happens in Greece and in the world in general, but also optimistic as to the future, he managed to pull me completely out of the world of music, into a wider universe: into the universe of a man who has chosen to use his judgement, to think, to see the problem (about the war, the role of politicians, about his own role), and to voice his thoughts about these problems. Whatever the price! [despite the use of some fairly bad language - unusual for Dalaras - both men consistently use the polite form of address, not the familiar. I can't translate this, since the two distinct forms are a refinement which English has lost since the 18th century -G.]
Posted July 18, 2003 · Report post First question. - In the stage in which you are now, could you say that talent is something that goes beyond the skills a person can learn? Possibly the talented person is something beyond that, is a person who loves life, who is able to view things differently? You are right. People, naturally, are not all identical. Our ancestors, though unlearned, used to say that the fingers are not all identical. Clearly, there is such a thing as skill [that can be learned]. But there are also people who have greater width (in this respect) and others who are... more limited. Is there anyone who can see 360 degree around them? No. The thing is someone reacts when he is looking. So, it's a matter of the personal equipment of each person: of the soul, inspiration, culture, etc. All these, taken together, make each one different. There is such a thing as talent, yes. Possibly genetic factors contribute to its existence. Its existence, though, is certain. The thing which, maybe, it would be better for us to talk about, and which is more relevant to the others, is that talent, by itself, does not suffice - curse the lie! We have had, and still have, examples of people with tremendous abilities in a particular domain, who, in their life and their conduct, make a mess of everything. We see this all the time, people who come and disappear, who don't know how to understand their relationship with the talent, how to understand its nature and its place within their own life, the [question of] whether that talent that exists is their own, or something separate... Personally, I believe that a person is [always] hunted by these things. Add to that the fact that, unluckily, the human person has a fast trajectory. It's a being that begins and ends before anyone has a chance to understand its beginning or end. There is an incredible hardship [inherent] in this process, which is frightening to people. The... human epic is governed by a super personality. That is another reason why it is so blown-up. That is what mostly determines the person, this super personality. I don't know if it is the correct terminology, anyway it's a name by which one may speak of this very strange thing.
Posted July 22, 2003 · Report post Question 2. Και ναι και όχι. - Do you feel yourself to be a man who devoted himself to something he had no control over, and wasted his life on it? Look, I wouldn't want to speak of wasting. The human being does not remain unchangeable, even though his principles don't change. Let's describe the principles as a rock, which is not shaken easily. Other characteristics and ways of behaving, though, I think it's inevitable that they change. Because the knowledge changes, the wider environment changes... The thing I would like to believe to remain unalterable is the constitution of the material from which is made the "rock" of principles of each person. From that, each person may quarry their own stones, put up fences, plant things. Now, there are trees even up on mount Ymetos. In the fifties, there wasn't one tree up there. The decades change the people, change the way in which they see things. That is not a bad thing. Personally I don't feel I wasted my life, because I am among the lucky ones, who get to do what the things they desire to do. My pond may be a small one, or my sea or, if you like, my ocean - however one likes to describe it. But generally, count myself lucky. I was born in a free country. Its way of life is warm, sweet, harmonious, measured. I miss a great many things in my life, yes, but I am filled to overflowing with the sound of the guitar, and that shows a limited, a very limited environment. That environment is limited the same way as an entire world, a planet on the surface of which my life takes place, but that same planet, inside the universe, is a mere nothing. A little poetic, a little unrealistic, maybe? What shall I tell you? Of course, though, I missed out on lots of things, of course I missed much. Many journalists ask me if I would do the same things if I were to start all over again from the beginning. I'll give you another strange answer. Both yes, and no. Yes, I would do - and no, I would not.
Posted July 22, 2003 · Report post question 3. The one part I understand, the fact that you would. Where is the bit that you wouldn't do over again, though? It's [to be found] in the very many little crack [like cracks in the wall] which I did not go through. Not for lack of courage. I didn't go through because I did not focus on them. The illusion of success, the illusion of comfort, of survival, of love... So, I can tell you that there are some crevices, yes, that I would not fall into again. to ctnd...
Posted July 23, 2003 · Report post Question 4. Such as, for example? I will not tell you, because these pitfalls, probably, they should also be forbidden. The interdiction doesn't have to do with any rules and regulations. It has to do with firm convictions, and also with taboo, and with things I could never ever do, for the very simple reason that they would not be compatible with the other things I do. So, how much shall I admit to you? That success, of whatever kind - economic, artistic, politic, posthumous, - runs parallel to the choices of life. Because we are aware of only a part of all these things. There are many things around us that we can't touch. Some of them disastrous. Some others though are exhilarating. But what do you want? It's better not to go searching. Since even now, for all progress leaps forward in the labs, still we don't know what we are doing and where we are. Many people among us talk about things that once were principles, and now are not; that once were unshakable, and now are not. Even physics gets revisions on the basis of that kind of changes. What I can say to you is that this society, apart from the successful people, has also many who feel despair, who don't get a fair chance, who are angry, and others again who just can't be bothered. And I could find some more characteristics... There is a meaning in where you belong and how you yourself perceive your own self.
You have gone down in the history of song as a kid who was not prepared by his social background, his education, for the things that were going to happen in his life. I mean to say that you haven't come from a bourgeois background, where one grows up familiar with the notion of success. To "uneducated", which you mention, I would add something more: almost "orphaned". I don't refer to not having parents - in my case it's useful to make this point - but meaning the consciousness that I had not a single person with whom I might have talked about what was happening to me. So, how do you explain the fact that you resist so well against this "attack", as it were, of success and fame? What kind of skills could help a person in resisting, in overcoming the challenges that he is facing because of his success? What helped me was an un-intimidated feeling of absence of awe which characterizes me in facing these fenomena. I do not value them in the least, they leave me cold. - You turn your back on success? - I am indifferent to it, in essence. Not in the practical matters. Because when I work, I have to function as a professional. In essence, I disregard the context which distorts these things. What is important to me is only the essentials. And the essence has nothing to do with other people and how they judge me. It has to do with a deeper connection. At night a person sits up till daybreak, biting his pencil, chewing his sheet of paper. And in the morning he's written five lines, or a poem. This point of view from which I say that the thing is not how you can get higher up. The thing is how you can go deeper in. That's a big contradiction. There is a force within me which, in line with today's norm, tells me "deeper, go down as deep as you can". [reading αποχής as εποχής - but it seems to come to the same result, strangely]. That is a contradiction with what I live all the time. But I have no respect for any of things going on around me. I read somewhere, and liked a lot, that nowadays there are the God-crazy and the Gold-crazy. I'd call them the "fame-crazy". The world nowadays is being destroyed by the negative energy emitted by the god-crazy and the gold-crazy or fame-crazy. That is the negative, non-progressive, backward capitalism. While their whole dream is to reach the absolute capitalism, this capitalism ends up being not productive at all. And so we reach the point, now that the entire society is pushing in that direction, where suddenly we see things happening that are a humiliation for the human species. The representative of an oil company, to be president of the biggest army force of the world. There is a very serious problem. I imagine it must be very strange indeed for the thinking people in the whole world, outside America. By definition, this american president, in a sense, insults the american people, since he doesn't represent them. The real problem is that there is nobody who could express the american people. They tell you the war is all right with us, the chemical weapons are all right as they enable us to play policeman in the future... I think that all these, the position of the United Arab Emirates, the position of the oil companies, Blair's identification... all these things that happen contribute to what I was telling you about, that people, in order to commit evil, look for support from ideologies and seek justifications.
