Questions 9-10.

- Every generation always tended to view tomorrow a little pessimistically. I mean to say that this is the general tendency of people, sort of.

- Look, as for me, I don't believe it's a matter of a permanent and universal pessimism. The world and everyone in it, mr Lala, will be fine - I am absolutely certain.

This, however, does not mean that it will get better, with people going on living and accepting their proven mistakes. They have to hit a brake.

I will no speak as to what brake needs to be applied, as that would sound a bit strange. However it is a fact that it is not possible for 15 billion human beings to live on this planet - don't let's kid ourselves.

While it is easy to turn out meat for the astronauts to eat in deep space, while travelling to Aphroditi or Ares or I don't know where else they want to go next, that same meat - provided that there is, as we said, the capacity to produce it - can not be used to give life to the hundreds of thousands of people who die every month in Africa or in Asia.

Something is not going right.

I am one of the optimists who believe that things will go well, only that we need to play the game fairly. The game can't be played in terms of "Johnny wins the Jackpot, Johnny drinks it all".

- Αυτά που συμβαίνουν στην Ελλάδα πως σας φαίνονται;

- The things that are happening in Greece, what impression do they make on you?

- Someone who is aware of what is going on in Greece nowadays, and says that Greece is not doing well, is hiding the truth from him/herself [or you can read it as: he/she is preventing him/herself from seeing the truth]

Greece is doing well. At the same time, someone who says that Greece is doing well, or perfectly, and who closes his eyes to all the evils that are going on, he is preventing himself from seeing the truth as well.

Today we have an excellent prime minister, excellent...

Questions 11-12

- Ερασιτέχνης;

- I came so that we should talk about music, and you drag me off all the way into politics!

- In politics, I am an amateur - that's why I enjoy it.

- Amateur?

- Yes, because I never made it my job, though I did have some leanings in that direction, and might probably be able to make some small contribution, as I am an active person, always in motion, and stubborn.

However, I insist on remaining an amateur, politics unfortunately is existing and growing in the mud.

The prime minister, for all the years he's been in that position, has impressed me. He is clean and he looks as if the system cannot tolerate him.

In the same vein, we have an excellent President of the state, and some sympathetic people on the side of the opposition.

That is why I say things are going well, and will go better. Things have changed already. Today, they are not what they were in the 50's and 60's. We don't have this national watchdog which, at any time, could turn into anyone's henchman and start ruling by terror.

But that does not mean that the government is relieved of its responsibilities. The government bears responsibility and I may say that, no matter how much we love the society in which we live, at this point it should almost be forbidden to love the government.

Question 13.

- Δηλαδή, μου λέτε να μην αγαπάμε τον Πρωθυπουργό και τον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας για τους οποίους μόλις μιλήσατε θερμά;

- That means you are telling me that we are not to love the prime minister and the president of whom you just spoke so warmly?

- I am telling you that the government, the state, is not the prime minister and the president, but all of us, doing what we do the way we do it.

So, this state [as in government], who is afraid of responsibility [meaning that we, the people are afraid of responsibility, since we are the state], where each and everybody is pushing the other whenever he/she can, this state, we have to oppose it, to fight it.

And still - why not? - with our good intentions, with our presence and collaboration, we should help it.

Since lately, there is a lot of talk about terrorism, and all those things that are happening around us, what I have to say is that as unacceptable as terrorism is, apathy is equally unacceptable.

- Πως σας φαίνεται το γεγονός ότι προσπαθείτε να αφυπνίσετε μια κοινωνία η οποία έχει όλα αυτά τα στοιχεία της παρακμής;

Κατ' αρχάς σας ενοχλεί να τραγουδάτε για ανθρώπους που η ζωή τους δεν είναι συνεπής προς αυτό που αποπνέουν τα τραγούδια σας;

- What do you think of the fact that you are trying to wake up a society that has all the characteristics of decadence?

I mean to say that those who listen to you, wherever you are, they might go along with you in that moment, but individually, each one of them is a component of that decadence that you are fighting against.

First of all, does it bother you, that you are singing to people whose life is not consistent with what your songs are expressing?

- Mister Lalas, things are not quite like that. People fight, they are fighters, and since they are fighters they can become team mates.

People do fight, they are not indifferent.

One example of decadence is the well known story of television.

But despite of all that, sometimes you see some kids talking and op... you take courage and, while you were saying "where are we headed?", suddenly you are filled with optimism.

No, I myself am not pessimistic, I can see the world getting better. And I believe in that, that it will get better.

On the one hand, it's got the means, on the other hand it has started, little by little, to decode the knowledge.

Where it messes up, is at that particular moment of confusion at the crossroads, the moment when it is called upon to choose which way to go, and it doesn't really know. It has put in a little toe to feel if it's cold, it puts in its ankle, and then its knee, it doesn't know... It sees the neighbour who tries it and succeeds, and says: "What am I? Stupid? Since he can make it without getting cold..."

- I have noticed that the moment when the great artists, or the people who carry the spirit of culture, like Mikis Theodorakis, become disappointed, is the moment when, while they had believed that the state can actually understand what they are doing, they once again find it (the state) in front of them like an enemy.

- What you are saying is very absolute [as in: it 's an exaggeration]. And since you referred to Theodorakis, who is the man he is - he doesn't need us to add anything more...

The Theodorakis issue is an immaterial force. I am not speaking only of his music, I am speaking of all that he has been through, the torture, his ideology, his writing, his musical work, his actions, his journeys, his contributions. All these elements combine into an entity which is above everything [meaning it can not be touched or affected by the fact that the state does not understand as Lalas put it].

Questions 16-17.

- And we, who have not risen so high, what are we to do?

- We need look sharply at things and to be always on our guard.

It can't happen any other way, there is no other way to make a society.

This poor concept of democracy, it is so used, that unless it is really applied it becomes just a concept empty of meaning, which could be applied simply everywhere.

Very often I started wondering

with how many people from the ideological side to which I belong body and soul from birth can I have any relation

when these people have adopted ineffective stereotypes,

and done so with a laughable fanaticism,

which doesn't represent anything ideological of what they pretend that they are trying to protect.

The only thing which they manage to do is to acquire the short-lived fame of a newspaper column followed by their own name, or sometimes a nickname.

Such haste, it isn't worth it, there is no rush.

The ideology and understanding of the left in a society that it still unbalanced, and has a great potential to improve, is not a personal matter.

This is a very conservative mentality and also very short lived.

- Γιατί το λέτε αυτό;

- Why do you say that?

- I am saying this because there are very many people in these places who function very individually: I am going to say it and I don't care. Even what this person does is a lie or immoral, he still does it [meaning: still says it].

And that's where I say that these relations [of these peoples with the ideology the pretend to support] are fake or by accident.

And since many accidents are happening lately - some of them in our job as well - it would be nice if each one of us were determining their own path by themselves [meaning: being responsible for their actions].

Question 18-19

- Στην εποχή μας ποιος είναι αυτός που βάζει το μέτρο; Κάποτε έβγαινε ο Χατζιδάκις και με μια φράση που έλεγε αμέσως έβαζε τα πράγματα στη θέση τους. Σήμερα πιστεύετε ότι υπάρχουν τέτοια πρόσωπα που με τη στάση τους μπορούν να επιβάλλουν το μέτρο;

- In our time, who is the one who sets the standards? Once, Hatzidakis would come out with one phrase, which, the moment he said it, would put things in order. Today, do you believe that we have such personalities, who, by their position, set the standards?

- There will always be such personalities. To begin with, Manolis Anagnostakis is still alive.

Τι εννοείται «δεν μιλάνε»;

Αφού γράφουνΓιατί να μιλήσουν;

Όλοι πρέπει να μιλάνε;

- Yes, it's just that personalities like Manolis Anagnostakis do not speak.

- What does it mean, "do not speak"?

Since they write... Why should they speak?

Does everyone necessarily have to talk?

Like, mr. ... beep! decides to speak

(let's not name any names, to avoid lowering the level of this interview)

and starting from a [normal] need to express one's personal opinion, we end up with gossip.

And while all the mr. Beeps come out and talk, on the other side, Pavlos Tsimas is also speaking. Speaking critically, like Papahelas, like Stelios Kouloglou.

There are - there have always been - people who set the standard.

Some do it successfully, and others sluggishly...

Question 20-21

- How do you explain this little phrase which rules our day, which has become a shout in our ears, the "that, mister, that don't sell!" - implying that the only thing that sells is the low, cheap, trivial [3 English words needed for just ευτέλεια - G.] ? And the fact that you see journalists inviting the "trivial" personalities to their programmes, for no reason except selling?

- That is the big responsibility that rests on every person who holds a certain kind of position.

- Αυτό που λέτε αφορά και το τραγούδι;

Ξέρετε ποιο είναι το πρόβλημα, κύριε Λάλα;

- What you say applies to song as well?

- Absolutely.

That is just where what I am hurrying to.

Because I am not political [meaning: I don't do intrigue and power-play], what I am concerned with is song.

So, in my view, there is a big responsibility [resting] on the people who hold certain positions.

And [the person's handling of ] this responsibility is being shown every day, and can be judged from the way each one speaks, dresses, the "where and how" they spend their money, and generally from their choices, their friends, everything.

There is no other way.

Nobody is perfect.

All human beings have something to hide. All.

What is important is the position and relationship you have towards that which you say you love.

If you love your society and the world and everyone in it, help them. Because the world does not consist just of ourselves

You know what the problem is, mister Lalas? That the low, the cheapness, has knocked at our door and that we face it with more humour than we ought.

Question 22.

- I guess you are referring to the intellectuals, to the ones we call thinkers.

-We'd be better off if we didn't label them.

Lots of people treat the cheap dirt like a joke.

Keep in mind, though - and this is a proven fact - that even something quaint and funny can kill, it can become criminal sometimes.

And this ought to be a very strong concern of anyone who speaks in public

The fact that you might be a successful journalist, for example, and you choose to participate in a short lived glamorous situation along with another five politicians, and you chose to be in a place which, besides your own personal superficial pleasure [very freely translated], does not concern you at any other level, it means that you don't know how to "read" [meaning to analyze facts, how things are and situations in general]

Reading should not always be diagonal [meaning: superficial]. It should start from the beginning.

If you learn to read diagonally, the most you will become is a prosecutor, a disposable one.

That's what you will become. You want to? You could. Go ahead.

Today, especially, one has all the means [the Greek word signifies "means" as in "means to an end", but also "media, means of communication", as in "weapons of mass distraction - G] They are offered to you by everybody. And you know why they will give them to you? Because the government allows it.

Be careful, I didn't say that there is no government. I said that it is there, but that it needs shaking up.

"As I consider you 'my own people', I would like to say two words to you. I want to thank the American people for all the efforts it has made, all those years, for the cause of freedom, not only here, but in every part of the Earth. Especially, I would like to thank the american army and the pentagon, for their efforts for peace and justice, such as, for example, their continuing attempts to free Cyprus, all those years. I wish, then, that down there in Bagdad, they'll finish the business quick and good, and next year... on to Beijing."

Question 23-24

- Ποιος είναι ο λόγος που η ευτέλεια πουλάει;

- What is the reason why this cheap dirt sells?

- Because it's something new, it's new blood in the arena. And the arena wants blood.

Δεν μπορεί να μας πνίγει όλους αυτή η μπόχα... παντού αμερικανίλα και κανείς να μη λέει τίποτα! Δεν πρέπει να αντιδράσουμε; Δεν πρέπει να αναζητήσουμε κάτι καλύτερο; Την πραγματική τέχνη π.χ.;

- If we have, then, finally concluded that the human being has an inclination to the cheap and the easy...

- ... I will forgive him for that, if it happens [only] occasionally.

I wouldn't like to see to see him give in to it all the time.

I would say, do what you want to do, I won't tell you not to - because if you don't have any experiences, how will you form your judgement? - and afterwards, sit down and go a little deeper into what you find.

Go a little deeper, it's good for you, re paidi mou.

That is why I myself speak out, sometimes, and say things that are not agreeable.

Some time ago I used the word "amerikanila". In fact it is not a nice word at all. But so expressive!

That stench won't be able to choke us all... Amerikanila all over the place and no body says anything!

Isn't it necessary that we resist? Isn't it necessary that we demand something better? Real, true art, for example?

Translator's note: the word "αμέρικανιλα" he refers to is in http://www.dalaras.com/forum/index.php?s=1...f=2&t=885&st=70

I copy the first (relevant) half of the article here:

Giorgos Dalaras / Rembetika... Flamenco in Zygos

The relationship between rembetica and blues is - pretty much - a legitimate relationship about which we have heard a lot, and much more has been written. This is not the case for the "secret" ways by which we are connected to the flamenco.

Flamenco, rembetiko and laika are the musical blend offered this year by Giorgos Dalaras, in one more series of performances in Zygos (starting tomorrow), where he attempts to demonstrate "the truly fantastic inner nature of music, in opposition to the plastic fantasies and the "amerikanila" that we have been flooded with, lately".

Q. 25

- Πότε κάποιος είναι σε θέση να απολαύσει την πραγματική τέχνη;

- When does a person reach the point where they make real, true art?

- [Real] art, when it is displayed, reveals the pain and the grief of those who created it.

Art does not exist without pain, nothing comes into existence without pain - and what I'm saying here is touches the essence.

Even the dancer suffers pain in order to dance.

Nothing happens gratuitously.

Question 26.

- Σήμερα, ύστερα από τόσα χρόνια καριέρας, θα δεχόσασταν τον χαρακτηρισμό του δασκάλου;

- Today, after a career of so many years, would the characterization of teacher be acceptable?

- I can not teach lessons to anyone, not even to myself. I could sing to you though.

And if I have any truth, it will come out. It will show.

My own truth that I am, and always remain, a singer.

Question 27.

- Και τα τραγούδια σας; Παραμένουν τόσο καλά όσο ήταν παλαιότερα;

- And your songs? Are they, do they remain, as good as they were in the old days?

- Today, I myself have much fewer good songs than I had in the days of Loizos and Kougioumtzis, because I don't go out on to hunt for them, as I did then. Back then, I was a kid of twenty and I wanted. Now I do not want so much, I also want a little quiet...

The Economist is thus concerned about Mr Berlusconi both as an outrage against the Italian people and their judicial system, and as Europe's most extreme case of the abuse by a capitalist of the democracy within which he lives and operates.

Q. 28.

- Τα παραδέχεστε τα όποια λάθη μπορεί να έχετε κάνει στην πορεία σας;

- Do you accept such mistakes as you have made in the course of your life?

- I am human... If I am at fault, I'll pay for it. On the other hand, if some others are to blame, we have to call them.

Q.29.

- Θεωρείτε ότι έχετε γίνει πολλές φορές αδικαιολόγητα θύμα επιθέσεων;

- In your opinion, have you been the subject of many unjust attacks?

- I had the bad luck, that three or four people who turned against me were talented people, but very envious. What they saw in me, was a road to walk upon, each in their own way. They were not imitating me, I'm not saying that - don't misunderstand me. But they know that they are following the same road. They are doing exactly the same thing. They endure it, they feel it, they contribute to it... They put me down on grounds like "we're tired of that guy, let's have something else...".

Then again, I never turned against any one on a personal level. And that must be a problem to lots of people.

We mustn't live in the era of arbitrary evil without thinking. We should at least admit for what reason we have become bad.

Question 30.

- Δεν θέλω να σας κάνω να φανείτε κακός, αλλά ποια είναι η γνώμη σας με όσα συμβαίνουν γύρω μας στον χώρο του ελληνικού τραγουδιού;

- I don't want to make you look bad, but what is your opinion about all that is happening around us, in the domain of Greek song?

- Today, I can not do what the kid does who comes out to sing in torn-up clothes.

I don't have that kind of figure, and neither can I hop about like that, I'm grown up.

What I'm saying is, dammit, I'd like that kid to do something that is truly ours - not Greek, as in simple-minded, or as in wearing tsarouhia [= the funny shoes with the big pompom on top -G.], but as in something that comes out of ourselves.

That means that that kid will have to study, even Varnalis - even if he doesn't see the point. It is necessary though, it is required.

It's not admissible that you ask him about Eleftherios Venizelos, and he tells you "that's a square in Peristeri".

What's that you're saying, hey, little fukker? No, that kind of thing is not allowed.

Since I undertook that, in my time, without anyone telling me to - I went myself to find out what everything is. I never took refuge behind any kind of circumstance to cover up or to make a plea for my ignorance.

Question 31.

- Μήπως σήμερα υπάρχει περισσότερη βλακεία παρά ταλέντο;

- Possibly, today, there is more simple-mindedness around than talent?

- History shows that it is unfair to put all the blame on today.

Every time has had the simple-minded and the talented...

And there are simple-minded people with talent!

The people who have talent, I forgive them for being simple-minded.

I say they have a right to improvement.

They have a right and they can do it, they have the potential.

And you know, the fact that whoever gathers a following, sells records... he will always have something that no one can devaluate.

Next installment! Question 32:

Σου λέει ποιος είναι αυτός που ονειρεύεται σε μια εποχή που ο κόσμος υποφέρει;

Γιατί να μην ονειρεύομαι, ρε φίλε;

Εσύ δεν ονειρεύεσαι;

Τότε γιατί γράφεις και βάζεις και το επώνυμό σου από κάτω;

Σε τι είσαι καλύτερος και θες να ξεχωρίζεις;

Η δική σου ανάγκη να ξεχωρίσεις δεν μοιάζει με τη δική μου προσπάθεια να ξεχωρίσω στη δουλειά μου χωρίς να σε βλάψω;

Εσύ γιατί για να υπάρχεις θες να βλάψεις εμένα;

Εγώ το 'κανα;

- Do you know what I think when I listen to you? That you are, after all, a kind of teacher for the young generation.

- I would be the least appropriate person to be a teacher since I have no knowledge about anything.

The only knowledge I have springs from the need I have to communicate, to talk, to say things.

I never preached to anybody. On the contrary.

Sometimes I spoke my dreams and I got verbally abused, by famous people, with talent, who write nicely.

The guy says to you: who is this guy who is dreaming, in a time when people are suffering?

Why should I not dream, buddy?

You yourself, don't you dream?

Then why are you writing and even signing your name at the end?

What difference between you and me? I don't get it.

What makes you better, and makes you want to distinguish yourself?

Doesn't your need to distinguish yourself resemble my efforts to distinguish myself in my job, without hurting you?

And you? Why your existence depends on hurting me? Have I done the same to you?

In my case, even my reaction is moderate.

And question 33.

- I hear anger...

- Listen, I don't go after people but after actions that I consider wrong, and which I believe that one should not validate by accepting them.

I mean to say, mister Lalas, that I never went to court against a person. For me, every time, the only important thing is to make clear that a certain action is wrong.

And the reason is that I it is a proven fact for me that I have to live inside this thing which is called society, to live with its specific conditions, and to do my creative work in it.

Here are a few bits that already got posted when Nighthawk raised the question about Dalaras' own songs.

Question 34 - 35.

- Δεν έχετε μπει ποτέ στον πειρασμό να γράψετε δικά σας πράγματα;

- Βεβαίως. Μα δεν έχω γράψει πάρα πολλά. Γιατί δεν το κάνω; Θα σας πω, αλλά μη γελάσετε. Ντρέπομαι, νομίζω ότι δεν είναι καλά. Και κάτι άλλο που δεν με τιμάει Να το πω κι αυτό;

Σε ποιον να κάνω τον δάσκαλο και πότε είπα να κάνω τον δάσκαλο;

Από πού κι ως πού;

- Don't you ever have the urge to write your own things?

- Of course. But I have not written very much. Why I don't? I will tell you, but don't laugh. I am shy, I feel they are not good. And another thing that does me no credit, shall I tell that too?

- Say.

- I feel like I will live a long time, I always feel I have all the time before me. Because, fukk death. What can I tell you... I never was afraid of dying. I have no understanding of what that thing is. I worked from the time I was seven years old, I got treated like a dog, I got my ears pulled, I had no companion except my mother - since I was separated from my brother very early - in general I grew up in weird circumstances. For that reason also I constantly hear them say "how strange he is...."

I am strange, yes. Though, you know, it's very hard for someone to recognize his own strangeness. I don't know, or maybe it isn't.

But my faults aren't anything terrific: I'll tick you off if you come late, I'll tell you to play better even though you are tired, I'll have the Virgin on you [as in: curse - G.] if you haven't tuned your guitar correctly... that's about it, there aren't any others.

That's why I yawn easily. And when that happens, I turn over and go to sleep. It's not that something bores me, it's that things are all right.

I never was afraid of anyone. And anyway, who should I be afraid of? When you have, from the time when you were a small kid, known what it is to be abandoned, to be in trouble, the chestnut doesn't run [as in: . It's because I lived through hardship, mr. Lalas, that I escaped it.

You can't push me around. Me, I always loved good breeding and love - by force of circumstance - and I won [by it]. That, very probably, is unforgivable for certain people.

I don't know through what hardships kids go. I escaped many university exams, I escaped the knot in the belly... But I felt that one elsewhere. It's a very difficult thing to go out into the world. That too is like passing exams to get your degree...

Sometimes... For chrissake...

To whom am I supposed to be teaching lessons, and when did I ever say I would do any such thing? On what grounds and to what end?

Except if you believe that when Manos Eleftheriou says

"Words of grief, that's what our songs are made of,

because we live inside the injustice, from our cradle onwards"

he is teaching lessons.

After a little interruption devoted to family matters, let us resume the course of this communication. Since I can't sleep anyway. And, btw., the fact that he refuses to teach&preach needn't stop anyone from learning from him. There is plenty, if you listen.

Question 36

- Ποιος είναι κατά τη γνώμη σας δάσκαλος σήμερα;

Εγώ θα σας υποδείξω και τους δασκάλους;

Για να λένε μετά ότι... κάνω τον δάσκαλο;

- In your opinion, who IS a teacher, then, today?

- Let someone go and ask Manos Eleftheriou, who still lingers among us.

Let them ask also Kostas Tripolitis, since he wrote "History carried the dirty tale that we are finished" [the first line of the song "Anemologio" - G].

Whoever wants to is free to go and ask him.

Of course, if they go there with a camera, they mustn't mind if he shuts the door in their face and spits on them.

Much good may it do them, he knows the reason why.

Let them go there again, let them show him that they are his friends.

And let them put him on the air, because if there has to be all that muck on tv and in the media, it's better that someone should put on the air Eleftheriou and Tripolitis.

Or let them take excerpts from Kastoriadis to broadcast.

Let them to do something, anything.

Me, to point out the teachers to you?

To have them say, afterwards, that... I'm teaching lessons?

Ah! Let everyone take the latest anthology of poems by Stratis Paschalidis and read the poem "Kariera" ("Career" - G.).

That exhortation is something I can offer, myself.

"Kariera", by Stratis Paschalidis, "Iptameno Chali" ("Flying Carpet - I asfaltos pou trechei 1, #5, or Apo Kardias 1, #16) by Alkis Alkaios, and the short stories by Sotiris Dimitriou.

And that doesn't mean I am teaching lessons!

As I am very interested in Elevtheriou:

Geske, do you know what Dalaras exactly means when he says:

Usually the german translation for "φυτοζωεί" is "dahinvegetieren" (in English obviously: "vegetate"). That means: to be alive, to exist but under very bad conditions - either financially, either socially, either concerning the health.

Do you think that this is what Dalaras wanted to say about Elevtheriou? Or do you think that he simply and neutrally wanted to express that Elevtheriou is still alive among us? (That seems to be the meaning of the word "linger" you use, as in German - according to my dictionary - it means "verweilen")?

Michael, you've caught me red-handed in a typical translator's handling of a case "insufficient data". I don't know anything more about Eleftheriou than what this sentence says.

So, I used "to linger" because it covers all the possible meanings. Neutral: the general meaning of 'linger' is 'not to have gone away yet' or 'not be in a hurry to leave'. Worst case: as in "To linger on, to die a lingering death" means to vegetate in its worst sense, to be almost a corpse already. Best case: "To linger among..." is a standard expression for "to be reluctant to leave pleasant surroundings".

To the reader who doesn't know, it says simply that Eleftheriou is not dead. The one who does know will automatically read the right interpretation into it.

Yes, it's a trick. Every trade has its tricks.
