Sarantiis what do you mean? What kind of problems?

I think you can share it with the rest of the community since we already know too much

It's obvious that many people were disappointed with these statements of Dalaras against the US policy.

I need to say that I feel very strong admiration and pride for his courage!! I think he had thought about the reactions and he was determined to do it no matter what "problems" would arise. I dare to say he was prepared for the consequences! I'll totally agree with Kenan who said he's HUMAN!! Not all can be bought and sold, THANKFULLY!!!

He didnt talk about Yugoslavia and Afghanistan. That was the journalists's translation of "στον υπόλοιπο κόσμο". I put down what he said word by word.

Now as far as the reactions go. The only problem the New York concert created was the disparoval of those who after the concert were saying. "So what? Big deal! We are the strongest (and they used WE while talking in greek), and if we feel like going to Peijin next year we will do so".

Don;t get me started about them, because I am not a very nice person when it comes to people who try to convince me that gyros is made of lamb

He created problems in the heads of those who believe that here it is "shut up and sing".

And when he sings Hasta Siempre what do you think he means. And Anemologio. And the 5 years he spent singing for that little island that they have been fucking for 30 years, who do you think he refers to. The Chinese, or the Australians?

Give me a break. There is so much political correctness in this country, I am about to vomit every day.

Wake up and open your eyes. It's ashame to sit down and take everything they try to serve you. No matter how much money you managed to make. Where the fuck is your filotimo.

And stop treating concerts like social functions. They are not. You need heart and soul to go to a concert. Not just a $100 ticket. That will get you in the first row but will not open your mind

It's a bit late in the topic, but I think the article may be interesting enough to post anyway.

here is the article from the link Agnie posted earlier:

and here is rather hurried translation. I hope someone will check that I didn't make any bad blunders, please.

Poisoned thanks

«With the courage of my opinion, and of the relationship that we have built up between us over the years until now»

on Friday evening in front of an audience of 3500 people, mostly of greek descent [that is, greek-americans - translator's note], Giorgos Dalaras spoke boldly and without mincing his words about american foreign politics.

It was at the end of the concert which he gave with Marinella in the jam-packed Radio City Hall in New York, during the curtain call. After first taking a step back, thoughtful, at last he grabbed the microphone, with decision, to speak his mind.

(picture caption: "Giorgos Dalaras: and next year on to Beijing!")

"As I consider you 'my own people', I would like to say two words to you. I want to thank the American people" were his first words, which, giving no hint of what was to follow, got a response of enthusiasm and applause. "Let me thank the american army and the pentagon, for the help they gave on Cyprus against the turkish occupation" he said after this, changing his tone and creating two opposing camps, where the Cypriot part of the audience went on clapping, many of those of greek descent started to protest. But Dalaras hadn't finished yet: similar "thanks" were given to the american government for what happens in Jugoslavia, Afghanistan and now in Irak. "And next year, on to Beijing", he finished, leaving the majority of the audience chilled.

[compare to this the word-for-word report by our own special correspondent:

"As I consider you 'my own people', I would like to say two words to you. I want to thank the American people for all the efforts it has made, all those years, for the cause of freedom, not only here, but in every part of the Earth. Especially, I would like to thank the american army and the pentagon, for their efforts for peace and justice, such as, for example, their continuing attempts to free Cyprus, all those years. I wish, then, that down there in Bagdad, they'll finish the business quick and good, and next year... on to Beijing"]

A pretty example of how the media work - and a warning to all of us who rely on them for information, I think.

Many among the audience were all the more bewildered because during the whole concert, Dalaras had been anything but talkative. Later, they openly expressed their indignation and anger at what he had said. The same indignation and anger was also expressed, it seems, by quite a number of people of greek descent, against the treatment of the Irak intervention by the greek MME, in letters of protest sent to the greek embassy.

"A provocation, and bad manners" was how some of them of them later criticized the conduct of the Greek singer. Others, again, disagreed, stressing that "there was a clear differentiation between the american people and the policy of Washington"

The indignated ones included also some officials of greek-american society, who declared on ΑΠΕ that "the action of our artist compatriot was psychologically ill-considered, not fair, and as much in its tone as in its contents, provoking bitterness and indignation in our people, while with he missed a chance of sending a serious and essential message for peace"

Dalaras and Marinella went on to give a concert in Atlantic City on Saturday evening, and another yesterday in Chicago, and today they are staying in Boston.

I am shocked that people should dare to be offended by Dalaras' statement.

If they want to disagree with him, and to say so - fine.

But to say he shouldn't have said it! Let them die of shame!

That concert in New York must have been very interesting, apart from being "entertaining"!

Τι μήνυμα να πάρει η "ομογένεια" που θυμάται την Ελλάδα και την παγκόσμια ειρήνη μόνο στις συνεστιάσεις;

This is the whole article of the New York Times!

Heartache and History in a Style of the Greeks

Love, fate and history were the makings of the songs of George Dalaras and Marinella, two singers who have been stars in Greece since the 1960's and who shared the stage of Radio City Music Hall on Friday night. The audience regularly sang along on their hits.

Mr. Dalaras, who sells out arenas in Europe, is a pivotal figure in Greek popular music, drawing on major songwriters and holding on to traditional elements and a social conscience. He has a kindly, imploring voice that can take on a steely core. "All the songs have bitterness in them," he sang on Friday night, "because we live in pain from the day we are born."

Yet Mr. Dalaras was a modest, amiable figure next to Marinella, a luminary in the Greek pop called laika. Her voice was earthy and strong, and she had the presence of an actress as she danced a few teasing steps or brought dignity to longing.

Their repertory approached European pop from the East. In a few songs (including one in Spanish) Mr. Dalaras demonstrated a smooth, European-styled tenor, while Marinella had a quasi-chanson and a song that could have been bachelor-pad music, complete with bongos. Yet their orchestra had a front line of bouzoukis and an accordion, and Mr. Dalaras played not only guitar but also baglama, a small lute.

Many of the songs were built on odd-meter Greek dances, stately or ebullient. And both Mr. Dalaras and Marinella sang with the grainy peaks and the microtonal ripples of Greek folk styles, lending the songs the gravity of tradition. One striking song began with a violin solo that mimicked the trills and slides of a traditional Greek fiddle. Marinella sang about a mother receiving letters from her son, a soldier, and telling him not to write because she could not read.

When Mr. Dalaras wasn't singing about love, he also had wartime memories in mind. He sang about the bravery of Greek soldiers in World War II and about an isolated Greece fighting Turkey during World War I. Throughout the set, heartache also invoked the sorrows of history.

http://www.eone.gr/portal/news/news_find.a...69506&rs=257831

This article has a very interesting part, that we didn't know!!!

This is the part :

Can someone translate it? It is very very important piece of information!
