Posted August 23, 2003 · Report post There are a lot of topics concerning people's favorite Dalaras songs. Off the top of my head, I would have to say mine are (not in this order, necessarily) ... 1) Paraponemena Logia, 2) Mes Tou Vosporou Ta Stena, 3) O Palios Stratiotis, 4) Mi Mou Thymoneis, Matia Mou, 5) Ilie Mou Se Parakalo, 6) O Tragoudhistis, 7) Mana Mou Ellas, 8) Stin Alana, 9) Tis Dhikaiosynis Ilie Noyte, 10) Vrehei Sti Ftohogeitonia, 11) H Asfaltos Pou Trehei ... ... okay, well, I'm going to cut that short because narrowing it down is actually near impossible, come to think of it. But anyway, the interesting point is that I initially disliked 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, and some others. Tou Votanikou O Mangas used to be my favorite, but I've found that it has faded, along with several other songs. The current, albeit incomplete, list is tried-and-true. Does anyone else have similar experiences with their favorites? I find that the more I listen to a song, the more I realize that I actually like, or dislike, it. Am I just weird, or would you care to confess prejudicing a best friend or two (that's figurative language, there)? What did you dislike that you later came to appreciate? I'm just curious.... Posted August 23, 2003 · Report post Eeeeeeeeeh! An interesting question!! Let me see... I find it very difficult to dislike anything at all that is sung by Dalaras' voice. My friends tell me I'm obsessed - maybe, though I don't think so. So, I can't think of any Dalaras songs that I initially disliked, and then came to like. He has a few (very, very few) songs that I really dislike as songs, that I only listen to because it's his voice. He has a vast number of songs that he sings, and that other people sing too, and so far I have been unable to find a case where I prefer someone else's version to his. I'm actively searching (trying to clear the accusation of being obsessed) but I haven't yet found one. He has also many, many songs that I "missed" (as in "didn't notice") when first listening to a record, and which later came to be fill-my-heart favourites. Notably "Αυγουστος" which the radio is playing me just now. He has whole records that I didn't "get" at first listening, or second, or third - until suddenly they clicked. The most extreme instance must be Μικρά Ασία, which I merely "liked well enough" for the first year or so that I had it, and which I have since litterally, passionately, learned by heart from end to end. But for 'hate to love in 6 seconds', I would name songs that I first heard (and hated) sung by someone else, and then heard (and loved) in his voice. I know there are some, but I can't think of specific examples right now - will post when I find.
Posted August 23, 2003 · Report post What did you dislike that you later came to appreciate? I'm just curious.... What I dislike that I later came to appreciate? Well, my answer will not be about Dalaras or about any of the songs he sings, but about the Egyptian singer Um Kalthum. When she died in 1975, I heard that she was one of the best singers who ever lived on this planet, so I wanted to try one of her songs. I went to a record shop in Lille and bought one of her LP's, "Fakkarouni". I was surprised that there was only one song on it, a song that lasted for more than half an hour. When I went back to my room, I listened to her but I was very much disappointed by what I heard. I just had no patience to listen to the while LP. Today, I understand why they call her "Star of the East". She indeed is one of the best singers ever !!! And she is one of my favourite artists, together with all best Greek artists, including Dalaras, of course. From "hate" to "love" seems to be the best way for me... There are songs that many people love that I never particularly appreciated: "Synnefiasmenh Kyriakh" for example. I like the lyrics, of course - they are great - but I am quite indifferent to the music !!!!!!!!!! Not even Bellou whom I admire tremendously, nor Dalaras have made me change my mind... Strange, isn't it, considering that I am a rebetiko "lover"... As far as Dalaras is concerned, I appreciate some of the songs he sings when they are not sung by him (I prefer "Hasta siempre" by Carlos Puebla for example - I don't like it AT ALL by Dalaras, or "Ti sou leei h mana sou gia mena" by Bellou -I like it too by Dalaras, but "y a pas photo", as we say in colloquial French), but I could not imagine "Sthn Alana" or "Mh mou 8ymwneis matia mou" sung by any other singer than Dalaras. Afta gia twra...
Posted August 23, 2003 · Report post HATE TO LOVE FROM ME TO FRANCOIS AND VICE VERSA there are two songs that I dare think that Thalassinos and Alexiu sing better... All others are sang better by Giorgos. ENOITE. Sto Ta Smirnaika tragudia his, tu Pandeli, voice is sooooooo something, like is of Papazoglu, whose songs noone else could sing better, or wouldn't Giorgos, krinondas me to pos traguda to 'hiljes fores', but Alexiu is unbelievable in hers, so as am I who don't remember which song I am talking about!!! FACSINATED, not obsessed.
Posted August 23, 2003 · Report post As for me, it was the whole Dalaras at first. It wasn't hate but just like...ok, it's interesting, but no big deal. However, the more I listen the more I like the way he sings nowadays, and the more I feel like knowing his work.

Posted August 23, 2003 · Report post I have two songs of Dalaras I liked once very much, and since I understand the texts, I avoid them. Too sorrowful. Surprisingly they are the two very known songs of Stavros Koujoumtzis, the composer I admire deeply as the best songs author of Greece (without having forgotten about Giannis Spanos, Mimis Plessas and Manos Loizos). The songs I mean, are O ouranos fevgei varis & Ola kala kai ola oraia....

Posted August 25, 2003 · Report post Celeste, sorry, I missed your two , same, questions because I have only recently worked out a of how NOT to miss any new post, so I saw your question a minute ago. Well, what is interesting, in my opinion ,is how you became a fan, I think that most people ether dearly love him or dislike him, so you seem to be inbetween, so I have a slight doubt that it is rather impossible that you grew to like Giorgo. I have a feeling that you are here for some other reason, like a good company of dianoumenon anthropon, intellectualls, whose conversation and arguments are a challlenge to the mind or that you joined with someone else, Nighthhawk maybe who I don't see as a big admirer of Giorgos either, and so you gradyally learned what Giorgos is and of course that you like him now. But it is far from what some of us feel when we listen to some of his songs, we call it 'trela' and I dont think that you are any crazy about him as I am together with some others equally bewitched .... Thid is what I meant. I know I might be wrong.
Posted August 25, 2003 · Report post I just rembered the songs that I think belong better to Haris than to Gioros, THEOS AN INE... I would like to hear some oppinions of this, and also of TA SMIRNAIKA TRAGUDIA for which song I also feel that Pandeli' voice there is theiki... Please note that it is EXTREMELY UNUSUALL that I put ANYONE in the world before GIORGOS DALARAS, except for MY SON, at certain fields....

But it is far from what some of us feel when we listen to some of his songs, we call it 'trela' and I dont think that you are any crazy about him as I am together with some others equally bewitched .... That's pretty interesting. Yes, indeed I grew to like Giorgo's music and even more since I joined the forum. However, the company is indeed an extremely positive value. I would never belong to a forum where all that was said was: Oh, he's so marvellous, so handsome, he sings so well and blablablabla... It's a fact that the members in general post very interesting opinions, many have a great cultural background- and I'm not only talking about greek music- compared to them I feel very humble. Mostly it has nothing to do with teenagers' hysteria which of course would be inappropriate considering that the man is fifty and something and that we're here for his music and personality and not for his good looks (or not good looks, depending on opinions). To synthesize, one of the biggest reasons why I go to London in October is that I want to meet the people and share. (another one is that a little break after such a hard work year and before an even harder year, will be such a treat) You're wrong on one point: I joined first and Nighthawk after and he did it at first to mess with me. He thought I wasn't going to discover. Ah! Ah! but men are so easy to see through I am the biggest Dalaras's admirer here- at home, I mean-, Nighthawk appreciates his music also but he prefers guys with long beards and weird voices like Psarantonis (I like him too, but I prefer D.) Don't think that I am not touched by what he sings, I'm not treli maybe but I have two big issues: I don't understand that much Greek, I don't have the cultural background of greek music and Dalaras's discography that many have. That's why, I cannot participate in many discussions about music. So I read. Furthermore, it's pretty lonely to love songs by someone nobody knows about here in Portugal ( and many make fun with me because of that: here she comes with her greek guy!- not said in an offensive manner, of course) and it's pretty disappointing not to be able to get his Cds, either because they don't exist in the market either by...lack of funds I have to say that belonging to the forum is my only link to his music and to Greek Music in general. And for that I'm deeply obliged to the kindness of members whose names I won't cite (they know) but who will always be in my heart for their absolute generosity towards someone they never met. You see, in this quite long post, it's to them I want to pay my tribute.
Posted August 26, 2003 · Report post Celeste, Believe it or not, I really sympathize with you. I am a Greek American living in a relatively small town on the South Shore of Massachusetts. My local friends who are Greek are not familiar with their heritage. Those that live far away, to a greater extent, are, but they tend to prefer Notis Sfakiakanis, Pashalis Terzis, and other artists more popular today in Greece. I've met very few Dalaras fans, and even them I do not speak to much. Of course, I'm sure you do have a worse situation, but many of us are in the same boat, and that is one reason I like this forum very much now. That wasn't really pertinent, but I felt like saying it Oh, but my mana is a fan now! We sing together in the car on the way to Cranston, Rhode Island, where I practice Greek dancing an hour and a half away from my home The lengths I must go to for my heritage
Posted August 26, 2003 · Report post That wasn't really pertinent, but I felt like saying it Oh, yes, Antometrios, it was pertinent. Particularly on not such a good day I'm having, it's nice to get some support. Thanks to this forum, we're less lonely you and I in our "craziness".
