Ανθοδέσμες πρόσφεραν ως είθισται στο φινάλε της προχθεσινής συναυλίας στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής δύο κοπέλες στους δύο τραγουδιστές Γιώργο Νταλάρα και Μιχάλη Χατζηγιάννη. «Επιτέλους λίγο κόκκινο», αναφώνησε ο Νταλάρας. «Κοντεύουμε να το χάσουμε το κόκκινο από την πολιτική πια», είπε χαριτολογώντας. Λέτε να ήταν μια έμμεση παρότρυνση εν όψει των ευρωεκλογών της Κυριακής;

a BIG thank you to all who provided info on this concert (especially Agnie and 'mpougatsa')....is sounds like it was a fantastic concert...i can't beleive they did Sting's "fragile" i english & spanish....that song alone would have made this event truly memorable!!

Yes,Hatziyiannis sang the english verse, then Dalaras sang the spanish verse. But I think the most important was their voices. You could hear the one performer sing songs of the other without any resentment and begin to sing too. This is what made these concerts a success.

«Aν είναι ωραία, να μας το ζητήσετε, να το επεκτείνουμε», είπε, μεταξύ σοβαρού και αστείου, ο Γιώργος Nταλάρας, όταν ρωτήθηκε για την «επόμενη μέρα» της πρώτης αυτής συνάντησης.

If the show is good, feel free to ask us and we will take it further, said Dalaras half-jokingly when asked what would happen after their shows.

I wanted to tell,

but there was no chance to get to Dalaras after the performance

The very first moment I heard about this going together on stage of Megaro, I asked myself why Dalaras with Xatzigiannis?

And still, after the 2 performances I dont know why.

Xatzgiannis is already very famous, he doesnt need any further protection.

So, why this coming together? To show Xatzigiannis can sing different songs? Well, he could put them into his programme. And he has already his audience, the κοριτσάκιας. Im one of the ωριμότερο κοινό of Dalaras. What do I do when Xatzigiannis is shouting σ'αγαπάω ?? Theres nothing interesting for me in his rock songs, like the Χωρίς Αναπνοή. This hammering beat (and the drummer was really too loud, especially the 1st evening) Im not longing for. This I can have in Germany every day. They play as background music in some shops, for example.

Or does Dalaras want to get the young girls of Xatzigiannis to listen to his music? Well, maybe they listened a bit at Megaro (as they had to) but I dont think one of these fans is interested in hearing music, they are just interested to see Xatzigiannis!

So, why this coming together? To show Dalaras is able to join in the Xatzigiannis songs? For what? Btw. while this already mentioned song Χωρίς Αναπνοή Dalaras looked very lost on stage!

I wanted to tell,

but there was no chance to get to Dalaras after the performance, as hundred of screaming little girls wanted to get to Xatzigiannisso they closed the door for everybody the first night (except Marinella). The second evening almost the same, but that night the two stars had pity on them and came out for some seconds, and the two were crushed in the crowd.

Well, Dalaras if you are longing for this, you should go on with the show!

And now, at least, some positive remarks :music:

The second evening was already a lot better than the first. The sound wasnt as loud as the night before and they changed a bit these strange lights which went directly into the eyes of the spectators.

Vivian mentioned already the gorgeous solos of Tsemberoulis and Karandinis. Yes!!! Great!!!

Btw. A great surprise to see Dalaras playing so many instruments in one performance! Two guitars. Did you see from the photos hes playing a new guitar? I dont know if theres one in the forum to explain the difference between the GUITAR and this new one. Would be nice if someone could help out. And he played the tsouras, the baglama, the mouth organ (φυσαρμόνικα), the tambourin (ντέφι) and cymbals (I think this is the name), some things you put into your hands and clap with them.

Xatzigiannis voice is good. And some of his slow songs I liked. But, for sure Ill never go to a concert just to see and listen to him.

There were some songs the two did very well together.

- Καραντί where one was really pushing the other to the next refrain, and the other did it more powerful and they put an incredible increase to this song!

The opposite, very quiet, very simple song. So pure and so nice.

-Or the μόνο η αγάπη μένει!!!

The first evening they did as the very last song and the second evening it was the one which send us to the interval. Oh, Dalaras, you should take more looks at your discography and choose more songs like this one. There are so nice songs, real diamants and you do for the 1millionst time again the καράβια στη στεριά, το πεπρωμένο or καλή τύχη.

-Fragile from Sting, just beautiful. One of the best songs from Sting!! And Xatzigiannis and Dalaras did it perfect!!

And the very last song at the second night, no real surprise (as Xatzigiannis is from Cyprus) Η δική μου η Πατρίδα.

And then you get the tears

And you are made up with all disturbances.

Have to agree with Anna, although I enjoyed the Hadjiyannis's songs as well - at least when he sings it is with a good voice and not like some other pop music where the person cannot even sing in tune!

It would be great to hear some other songs too as we always get a lot of the same these days. But I did enjoy the shows and I am sure they will sing together in the future as they seemed to have a great rapport with each other - almost like father and son.

Had to admit the highlight for me was also the last song on the second evening - it is one of my favorites anyway and it performed beautifully by both of them with great harmony and feeling. I wanted to cry too.

I' ve said it before, it's unfair to any singer to hear him next to Dalaras because as soon as he sings no other voice exits any more (Marinella being the exception that confirms the rule).

Chatzigiannis - in a suit - showing what he can do and still might if he chooses to learn.

the concert - it would have suited Zygos better than the marbles of Megaro - who knows maybe next winter?

:)

I don't know what to add or say as I haven't heard this singer before nor do I know of any of his material. Is he Generally known for Rock?

Come to think of it & uptil now, I've never heard of his name before either.

So unless this is going to be released soon on cd or in DVD (NTSC) format for me to buy and listen too, I wont have any idea how well he sings.

Well Rock would be OK, the problem is that he tends to do some easy pop songs... And his fans worship him as a pop singer. (Τα κοριτσάκια as Anna says)

I agree completely with Anna.

It's one of the reasons I didn't go to the concert (including the extremely high price of the tickets).

Anna, I would also like to thank you for your very interesting and thought- provoking report.

Like Christo, I am at a disadvantage because I don't know anything about Xatziyiannis (but will follow up the link that you gave). Of course, we cannot guess why Dalaras chose to collaborate with Xatziyiannis - perhaps they have developed a friendship and understanding off stage and decided to work together as a result of that friendship, rather than one trying to use the other to boost their popularity with a different audience. But who really knows? Perhaps someone could get the chance to ask him one day?

I certainly wouldn't object to hearing Dalaras singing songs that have a "rock" origin. After all, one of my favourite CD's is the concert with Papakostantinos, which contains quite a few "rockier" songs. And Dalaras can sing this type of music well, just as he can sing just about every other style of music. But I imagine that there is a world of difference between Papakostantinos' audience, and one whose audience consists of "screaming little girls", and it says a lot about the music that each one performs. Astron's comment about "easy pop songs" gives a clue to the difference between them. Perhaps I am being unfair - after all, as I said I am unfamiliar with Xatziyiannis and his music. I did ask one or two members if they already owned any Xatziyiannis CD's and the answer was no, which I found illuminating.

I have read comments in various threads in this Forum about Dalaras doing whatever he chooses to do without thought to his reputation and critics. It seems he has done this from the start of his career, and his audience generally follows him (although Panos and Geske have a "difference of opinion" regarding his Greek audience :D ). This collaboration with Xatziyiannis seems to be one route that Anna is not keen to follow (and she is absolutely entitled to her opinion, which was certainly not all negative). The other Forum members still appear to have enjoyed the concert very much. I am sure there was much to enjoy, and I am still sorry that I missed it, because I don't think one can have a proper opinion on something one hasn't seen or heard. I certainly never rely on critics alone when choosing to go, say, to the cinema or theatre. I always prefer to make up my own mind. But I don't think I will be buying any Xatziyiannis CD's.....

So thank you again Anna for giving us a different perspective on this performance, and to everyone else who gave their opinions. As I said previously, those of us who are unable to attend concerts really appreciate the reports of others.

And a special thank you to Agnie for her wonderful photographs! :wow::D

I would like to add something here.

Perhaps you should consider that for Hadjiyiannis to even start a career firstly he had to move to Athens as it is impossible in Cyprus for a singer to make any impact. He spent his youth singing Dalaras's songs, but if he had tried to break into the market with that style then he would never have got anywhere, so he went for a more commercial road.

I have heard him sing here with MImis Plessas playing piano and he was playing guitar, no other musicans, and believe me he sang some wonderful songs. He is very talented vocally and writes his own music as well.

I believe that Dalaras's reasoning was to encourage him to move into different areas of music and bring his name forward to an older audience. He is still very young and has a lot of years ahead of him and with guidance could become a great singer / performer.

Yes he sings pop music as that is what sells (everyone knows that) and he wants to make money and become known as anybody would, but wait a few years and I am sure that we will hear different things from him, and we will have Dalaras to thank for that too. Bringing forth new talent . I don't believe that it's a waste for Dalaras to sing with new younger singers to show them the way, and anyway he likes to do different things so why not!

Actually there were very few young girls there, no more that 20 - 30 and they weren't screaming, only clapping. I've been at a Beatles concert and that's screaming :wow::D:D:D

Also thanks to Agnie for the photos they were excellent, they took my camera off me the first night so I didn't bother to take it the second night and they didn't check then!!!! Typical uh!

Fragile

From the album Nothing Like the Sun (A&M)

Words and music by Sting

If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one

Drying in the color of the evening sun

Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away

But something in our minds will always stay

Perhaps this final act was meant

To clinch a lifetime's argument

That nothing comes from violence

and nothing ever could

For all those born beneath an angry star

Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall

Like tears from a star like tears from a star

On and on the rain will say

How fragile we are

How fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall

Like tears from a star like tears from a star

On and on the rain will say

How fragile we are

How fragile we are

Fragilidad (Spanish)

From the album Nada Como El Sol (A&M)

Words and music by Sting

Translated into Spanish by Roberto Livi

Manana ya la sangre no estara

Al caer la lluvia se la llevara

Acero y piel combinacion tan cruel

Lloras tu y lloro yo

Y el cielo tambien, y el cielo tambien

Lloras tu y lloro yo

Que fragilidad, que fragilidad

Fragil (Portuguese)

From the album Nada Como El Sol (A&M)

Words and music by Sting

Translated into Portuguese by Liluca Obras

E amanha a chuva levara

O sangue que a luta deixou derramar

Na pele a dor do aco tao cruel

Jamais a nossa voz vai calar

Um ato assim pode acabar

Com uma vida e nada mais

Porque nem nessmo a violencia

Destroi ideais

Ficara fragil demais

Choro eu e voce

E o mundo tambem, e o mundo tambem

Choro eu e voce

Que fragilidade, que fragilidade

If I remember correctly, Dalaras once said in an interview that what Sting writes are the English equivalent of laika. I see a lot of truth in that.

Well, I regret that many of my postings concerning Dalaras are critical (or sometimes even negative) but I see it becomes really more and more difficult to say something positive about his activities.

First of all let me say that I did not watch his concerts with Hatzigiannis and until now I did not know anything else about this singer than his name. (Obviously by intuition I did not buy any of his CDs.) Now I had the possibility to listen to samples of some of his songs thanks to Anna who gave us the link to an interesting website about him (http://www.xatzigiannis.tk/). And I must say I heard what I had feared: Exactly the same shallow pop sound you can hear everywhere in Europe (correct, Anna!); or in the best case you can call it the sound you can hear from every modern, "commercial" singer in Greece when they perform their weaker songs. With one big difference: Most of these other commercial singers (Remos, Tsalikis, Mazonakis, Garbi, Zina etc.etc.) have on every record at least 1 or 2 or 3 songs which keep in their music (more or less) the greek character and often these songs are really very beautiful, very good and some even excellent. (That's the reason why I always defend these singers when people [here in the Club but also elsewhere] maintain that the Greek "commercial" singers do not perform "quality music". They do! At least up to a certain degree.) But in case of Hatzigiannis (as far as I listened to him) there is almost absolutely nothing of this: Not the slightest Greek element in at least some of his songs but also no convincing alternative to Greek music. (Exception: One song I listened to was quite beautiful: "To soma pou zitas"; perhaps there may be one or two others.)

Concerning his voice: As far as I could hear via Internet surely not bad but also not exatrordinarily good. Nice to hear (at least in the songs I mentioned above.) It is more or less the same we can hear from many other typical modern greek singers good average, with other words.

So far so bad. And now comes Dalaras (!!) and gives concerts exactly with this singer. My first reaction in such moments is simply: "How is it possible? I don't understand it." But that's only the first reaction; because I think I know the answer (it is at least my personal assumption):

Once more Dalaras is doing something that appears to him useful in order not to loose audience or even to get a new audience. It's like a company that adapts their products to the wishes of the consumers: People last year preferred red shows with high heels? We produced them. This year there is a demand for brown shows without heels? O.k. - of course we will change our production in order to continue our sales. It's simply a commercial matter. A matter of marketing.

Of course in case of arts things may happen a little bit more subtle: Hatzigiannis is popular among young people. So what to do that I can also take advantage of this trend? As Dalaras knows that he cannot simply copy Hatzigiannis (or anyone else who is "in") he chooses to give concerts together with him. The effect? The young people, the teenagers, who up to now listened only to Hatzigiannis will have to listen now to Dalaras too (as it is the same concert) and so Dalaras hopefully will get some new "customers". That's good for the fame of a 54 years old singer who still does not want to retire (or to restrict to his old audience), that's good for the sales of his CDs (at least the more recent productions) etc.etc.

With one word: To me it seems to be simply a matter of marketing and public relations. (Not necessarily for financial reasons but for reasons who may have to do with the wish to remain popular, famous etc.). And to my mind in case of Dalaras this does not happen for the first time.

In my opinion the sad thing is that Dalaras obviously thinking primarily in such categories of marketing and public relations denies and abandons more and more his role as Greek singer presenting Greek quality music. Unfortunately I really have the impression that he does not care about this any longer! He does more or less everything with more or less everyone, he is like a supermarket (of all a little bit, but only things that are bought by everyone, nothing extraordinary, nothing with identity). And unfortunately many of his fans regard this as a proof of the vast variety of Dalaras' talent, as a proof of how many different things and styles he likes etc.etc.

In contrary, I for my part think that Dalaras could not have chosen worse partners than Hatzigiannis (or also some other artists in the past whose names I would not like to mention now in order to avoid additional annoyance about my comment). And the almost perverse situation is that at the same time Dalaras gives interviews where he complains about the bad condition of Greek's music today and telling us that he is ashamed to be a singer!!! (see the topic with his interview for the periodical "Elle": http://www.dalaras.com/forum/index.php?act...e30dd389a5b88f6 / Title of the interview: "I am ashamed to be a singer."!!)

Thats incredible!!!

So I fear that people who defend and try to justify all of Dalaras' activities are too optimistic:

Yes he [= Hatzigiannis] sings pop music as that is what sells (everyone knows that) and he wants to make money and become known as anybody would, but wait a few years and I am sure that we will hear different things from him, and we will have Dalaras to thank for that too.  Bringing forth new talent . I don't believe that it's a waste for Dalaras to sing with new younger singers to show them the way, and anyway he likes to do different things so why not!

Lynne, I agree with the first part of your first sentence (pop music sells and Hatzigiannis is one more of the singers who take advantage of this situation) but I completely disagree with the rest. You think (not only you, Lynne, but also many other members here) that Dalaras is the wise man whose activities (and comments) are guided exclusively by the highest artistic standards, by Dalaras' efforts to help young talents to become important singers etc.etc. Unfortunately the reality gives us a completely different image:

If Dalaras were guided by the highest standards he would have made all efforts to sing (and to publish on records) new songs (for example) by Kougioumtzis or Spanos or Moutsis or Ksarhakos (these are names mentioned by Dalaras himself, I could add a lot more) - instead of singing "Granada" or Bregovic or . And if he were really interested in promoting young, talented singers (of Greek music) he had not chosen the cooperation with Hatzigiannis.

I know that once more I will not convince any of Dalaras' supporters with what I write. But neverteless I see that Dalaras with many of his acivities unfortunately verifies my negative assumptions. :):)
