’ει μωρέ παιδιά _____||_____ Hey come on boys

Μουσική: Χρήστος Γκάρτζος_____||_____ Music: Christos Gartzos

Στίχοι: Λάκης Τεάζης_____||_____ Lyrics: Lakis Teazis

’ει μωρέ παιδιά _____||_____ Hey come on boys!

να πάρουν τα βουνά φωτιά_____||_____ Make the mountains catch fire

με το ζουρνά και το σπαθί μαζί _____||_____ with the zourna and the sword - together

να πιούμε ένα κρασί_____||_____ let's drink some wine!

’ει μωρέ παιδιά _____||_____ Hey come on boys!

ρίξτε ένα βόλι στη νυχτιά_____||_____ Loose a shot into the night

όλη η γη να ζεσταθεί _____||_____ to warm up the whole earth

που ζει μέσα στην παγωνιά_____||_____ which lives in freezing cold.

Έλα και συ κι ας εισ' εχθρός _____||_____ Come on, you too, even if you are an enemy,

να πιούμε ένα κρασί_____||_____ let's drink some wine!

έλα κι εσύ χόρεψε μπρος _____||_____ Come on, you too, dance forward,

να ζήσουμε μαζί_____||_____ let's live together!

’ει μωρέ παιδιά _____||_____ Hey come on boys!

νταούλια ντέφια και βιολιά_____||_____ daouli, defi, violins...

φέρτε το Χάρο το ληστή _____||_____ bring out Charos, that old brigand,

να πιει κι ας κάνει σαματά_____||_____ let him drink, even if he kicks up a row!

’ει μωρέ παιδιά _____||_____ Hey come on boys!

σε πολιτείες και χωριά_____||_____ in the cities and the villages,

απ' το δικό μας το κρασί _____||_____ of our own wine,

θα πιει κι η άλλη γενιά_____||_____ let the other kindred drink too!

Έλα και συ κι ας εισ' εχτρός _____||_____ Come on, you too, even if you are an enemy,

να πιούμε ένα κρασί_____||_____ for us to drink some wine!

έλα κι εσύ χόρεψε μπρος _____||_____ Come on, you too, dance forward,

να ζήσουμε μαζί_____||_____ let's live together!

’ει μωρέ παιδιά _____||_____ Hey come on boys!

να πάρουν τα βουνά φωτιά_____||_____ Make the mountains catch fire

με το ζουρνά και το σπαθί μαζί _____||_____ with the zourna and the sword together!

να πιούμε ένα κρασί_____||_____ Let's drink some wine!

’ει μωρέ παιδιά _____||_____ Hey come on boys!

κάντε το χέρι σας γροθιά_____||_____ make your hand into a fist

με μια καρδιά και μια ευχή _____||_____ with one heart and one prayer

να βγει το δίκιο στο κλαρί_____||_____ let justice blow the klari

Έλα και συ κι ας εισ' εχτρός _____||_____ Come on, you too, even if you are an enemy,

να πιούμε ένα κρασί_____||_____ so we can drink some wine!

έλα κι εσύ χόρεψε μπρος _____||_____ Come on, you too, dance forward,

να ζήσουμε μαζί_____||_____ let's live together!

Translator's note: I remember how this song confused me when nikolas first told me "listen to that one!" - mostly because it has so many applications of the (in)famous να, which has no single equivalent in English. Usually it expresses "purpose", but it can mean lots of other things... for example, I've put three different translations of the chorus, because the original actually means both at the same time, and I couldn't find a way to cram all that meaning into a single translation.

Personal note: I live in Arnhem, on the border between the Netherlands and Germany, site of some of the most ferocious fighting in world war 2; now, not quite sixty years later, the only vestige of enmity left is a more-than-usually-competitive rivalry in football matches. The idea of being at war with these neighbours is ludicrous - you can't even tell where the border used to be...

This song takes me back to the day I stood on a Thrakian roadside looking out over a river at Adrianoupoli, so close that it looked like you could touch it, but in another world, inaccessible. It brings back the conversation I had, with the friend who had taken me there, who lives there on the Evro river, where the mine fields are that illegal immigrants get blown up in every now and then... It's a thing I will never forget, being in that place, and hoping, against my native pessimism, hoping, almost believing, a day will come soon when, there too, people will have forgotten where the border used to be.

Here's to hope - let's drink some wine.

And if your religion forbids you to drink it.... you know what? Any religion that forbids you to make friends with your neighbour should change its mind - now.

Να ζήσουμε μαζί - so that we can live together. Let's live together.

’ει μωρέ παιδιά | | | Hey come on boys!

σε πολιτείες και χωριά | | | in the cities and the villages,

απ' το δικό μας το κρασί | | | from our own wine,

θα πιει κι η άλλη γενιά | | | let the other kindred drink too!

Gees, couldn't the last line of this verse mean that

"the next generation _ will _ also drink of that same wine"

thus bringing some hope for the future ?

I can't help being an optimist deep down

and with that music too :)
