Dalaras' news in English

I think it's worth to translate the following interview of Dalaras (even very schetchy as I did) considering recent discussions about new CDs and Dalaras' interest in Balcan and other non-(strictly) Greek music. Sorry for possible mistakes in both languages. B) corrections welcome.

Interview with G. Dalaras

07.06.2006

taken by Anastasia Grigoriadou from the periodical CITY231: she spoke with Dalaras about his upcoming concert with Dulce Pontes and S.Korkolis at the MM Thessaloniki (profits will go to the benefit of the Greek Society for Support of Handicapped Children).

Q. How did you get to know Dulce Pontes and how did the CD Mesogeios develop from your collaboration?

A. I have known D.P. for several years. She was suggested to me by Kosta Gavras in Paris who showed me one of her CDs. I was fascinated by her voice. She has something from Amalia Rodrigues who is a mythical musical figure for me, and at the same time, Dulce carries strong modern elements in her performances and compositions. I think this is the most important combination for an artist who is interested in advancing music one more step forward. The same Ive always admired in Paco de Lucia: his deep knowledge of the flamenco music, that is, of his folk music, which is enriched with his own modern elements this gives birth to new musical creations. I was fortunate to meet him on the podium, we became friends with Paco years ago, and now, thanks to Stefano (Korkoli), its been three years since our CD-recording collaboration with Dulce. We became friends, and also have much in common musically, so that we were able to organize a concert collaboration which, hopefully, will continue in the future, and the live CD Mesogeios is a result of this collaboration.

Q. Are such collaborations also useful for the Greek music ?

This is the only way for diversifying the sound of Greek music. It is essential that we remain on the ground of our own music but enrich it with elements from the other musical cultures that are in harmony with it. In my humble opinion, the Greek music would not benefit from repeating foreign lines from a song. This would be imitation, not creation. And music would not benefit when it is reproduced for a tourist entertainment or an ephemeral success but it will gain from absorbing elements from musical compositions and songs of other countries.

The Mesogeios basin is one of the richest musical regions of the universe It is a crossroads, a node where musical cultures of many countries meet: of Spain and Italy countries with marvelous musical traditions, plus of Asia Minor, Arabia and Persia. One might encounter here folk songs that echo in Irish ballades or fados which in turn resonate in the rembetiko songs. I am not sure that we know enough and are aware enough how much treasure is there. It is disappointing that information media do not represent this musical treasure as a dynamic value of the future, but somehow with regard to the past. Folk music must not be heard only at anniversary tributes, it must be alive in the people, and thats why it should be promoted by the music producers, by recordings, festivals, meetings of artists, etc.

Tribute to Michael Cacoyannis at Athens' Concert Hall

A tribute to Michael Cacoyannis, the director of "Alexis Zorbas" and "Stella" takes place at the Athens' Concert Hall on Monday, June 19, in the context of the Megaron Plus cultural programme. The Greek director, whose work has earned international acclaim, attends the event and shares his deepest thoughts with the audience. The tribute, which also includes screenings and a concert, is held at the Alexandra Trianti hall.

Michael Cacoyannis talks about his past, present and future as a director. The event, which is presented by Greek actress Katia Dandoulaki, also includes extracts from Cacoyanni's trilogy, who adapted for film three tragedies by Euripides. Thus "Iphigenia" -Ionesco had highlighted the film as the best one he had ever seen- "The Trojan Women" and "Elektra" form the core of the tribute.

The event ends with a concert by the renowned Greek singer George Dalaras.

At the tribute to Michael Cacoyannis, which was the 19th of June 2006, Dalaras did 2 songs, accompanied only by piano (Giorgos Papachristoudis). The Ένα Σαββάτο from the CD ΕΣ ΓΗΝ ΕΝΑΛΙΑΝ ΚΥΠΡΟΝ and Αγάπη που γινες δίκοπο μαχαίρι which Dalaras never did on any CD. This song got famous with Melina Merkouri and the movie Stella. The lyrics of both songs are by Michalis Cacoyannis.

Agnie was so kind to tape both songs and gives us the files to share these beautiful moments. :music: Thank you :)

Here is a translation of the post describing well the atmosfere of the Sunday's concert in honor of Andrea Papandreu http://www.dalaras.com/forum/index.php?s=4...f=3&t=3331&st=0

The yesterdays concert was a political event with a flavor of 80s.

Composers and singers which, for my own and previous generations, carry the mark of the spring of the first years of political reform in the beginning of 80-s paraded yesterday on the podium honoring with their works and performances the man who was Andrea Papandreou. The main presence was that of Mikis Theodorakis who one more time was met with applause, and at the end of the concert came up the podium while singing in company of all other singers and Giorgo Papandreou the song Sensible Sun of Justice (from Αξιον εστί of Odisseas Elythis).

The staging by Giannis Kakleas conveyed (with the help of video documentaries) both the personal achievements of Andrea Papandreou and the history of Greece during all those decades. What is the most remarkable though how he was able to connect this history with the world-wide events reaching finally to the war in Iraq and American imperialistic invasion

So that the democratic assembly which filled the stadium raised their voices with passion and indignation: Americans killers of peoples!

Giorgos Dalaras appeared (wearing blue jeans, green shirt and black jacket) two rimes on the podium. One time in the beginning when he performed with exceptional vigor "Anemologio accompanied on the piano by Thanos Mikroutsikos.

The second time was in the end when he performed Pepromeno at the accompaniment of the orchestra of Hristos Nikolopoulos and then, together with Melina Kana, Melina Aslanidou and Ilia Makri, two songs of Tsitsanis. And he also said couple words about that special relationship of mutual respect and love which existed between Papandreou and Tsitsanis.

He performed Aharisti with exceptional vigor, especially in the refrain where his voice had overcome those of the other three singers!

Among the all others who were very good the performance of Dimitri Mpasis was fantastic accompanied by the folk orchestra Mikis Theodorakis he performed songs of Mikis, and also was very moving the veteran Antonis Kalogiannis in the song Eimaste duo!

The event lasted from 21.10 to 1.30 - almost 4.5 hours! It was a great evening in honor of a great Greek politician of the most recent history.

Yesterday Dalaras gave a long radio interview on 'Sfera'. The most concrete piece of news is that he has a contractual agreement with his new record company to release 10 to 12 over the next few years.

He did not say anything about concerts-to-come.

Last Saturday night 7/8/06

The Greek Antenna broacasted Dalaras Live with Bregovic

from a Previous Convert of thers together.

Upon watching it though, I soon discovered its an older video performance from IERA ODOS although not sure of the exact month & year this concert took place.

He did sing songs though from the 1999 CD "Live at Man Auditorium with the Isreali Philharmonic Orchestra", and sang 'Haste Simepre' from "The Running Roads CD". So this concert could have taken place maybe between 1999 and 2000 but not sure maybe even 2001..

Bregovic hair still looked the same curly, thick & wavy.

He featured his Brass players and had brung with him a 4 women chorus singing serbian & greek with Dalaras. One bald headed guy on the Bongo or Congas.

One more thing, Dalaras guest singer was none other then

young Yiannis Vardis not Michalis Hatziyannis!!

Dalaras sounded good but still not sure of how the colloboration with Bregovic and the Brass Ensemble came about though. They sang and played alot of hits from the "Gianenna Papoustsia CD"

One thing too notice though, Bregovic sang a little Greek but he spoke in English pretty fluently too!!

The concert overall was about 2.5 hrs.

Quiet Enjoyable except for the Brass Instruments I don't know just felt like it killed the mood.

Favorite song of the night was none other then

"SAYAPO YIATI ESAI ORAIA" even if it had the Brass orchestration in it.

Bouzouki with Accordion would have been more preferred though.

:D

Sunday, August 27: "Erima Horia" at the village Kelli.

The concerts will probably start around 21:00, and the entrance will be free.

In Ta Nea from today we find the article 20 questions to Anna Dalaras

http://ta-nea.dolnet.gr/print_article.php?...8603&m=N16&aa=1

Interesting for us (of course the whole interview is interesting, but we are very interested to get news about upcoming concerts) :

Her last answer (to the question about future plans):

Το καινούργιο πρόγραμμα του Μεγάρου με πιο σύνθετες παραγωγές και δύο περιοδείες του Γιώργου Νταλάρα, Ευρώπη, Λατινική Αμερική.

The new programme for Megaro, with complex productions (I think shes talking about the already annouced History of Rembetiko) and 2 tours of Giorgos Dalaras in Europe and South America.

B) of course she didnt mention any dates ...

:pity: and nothing about Bregovic and Dalaras ...

The 30th of September there will be a Dalaras concert in Irodion, one newspaper told about the participation of Lydia Koniordou and Giorgos Kimoulis. But thats all we know at the moment.

B) If I got it right from some postings at "past concert impression, Theatro Vrachon" it's NOT for sure if the performance of Dalaras will take place at Irodion.

Maybe one of the members who knows more can tell ...

Today they annouced the 'rest programme' in Irodion this year.

See what they annouce:

More events at the Odeon of Herod Atticus! (30/8 to 6/10)

Check the following events' programme and find out more reasons to visit the Herodion from the end of August till October 6.
