From Kathimerini 16.07.2007 English version:

Istanbul cancels Dalaras concert

A decision by authorities in Istanbul on Saturday to cancel at the last minute a concert by popular Greek singer George Dalaras, prompted the Foreign Ministry to accuse Turkish officials of looking for a pretext to call off the event.

The concert was due to take place at the 15th-century fortress Rumeli Hisari as part of the World Congress of Orthodox Youth, organized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul. The musical event was canceled hours before it was due to start because the organizers had failed to deliver certain documents in time, according to the Istanbul governors office.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Giorgos Komoutsakos issued a statement saying the decision raises justifiable questions, as Dalaras is an internationally acclaimed artist who is especially liked in Turkey.

What has been presented as justification for the decision sounds like a pretext, said Koumoutsakos.

Turkish media suggested that reports about Dalarass criticism of the occupation in Cyprus played a role in the cancellation.

I imagine that because we are in an election campaign, perhaps certain people were able to aggravate the situation by writing inaccuracies that could have led to this cancellation, said Dalaras, who suggested the move was aimed at the Patriarchate.

I did not expect this, we set out with very good intentions to sing songs about our two peoples, added Dalaras, who is also a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency.

Turkey cancels Greek singer's concert in Istanbul, prompting complaints

2007-07-16 03:00:42

Published: July 15, 2007

ISTANBUL, Turkey: Turkish authorities canceled a concert by a Greek singer in Istanbul, saying they did not receive necessary documents, an official said Sunday.

Giorgos Dalaras' concert was expected to take place in a castle Saturday evening as part of the World Congress of Orthodox Youth, organized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul.

The performance was canceled because the organizers failed to deliver documents required for such events, said Nazir Senturk, of the governor's office.

The Greek singer had reportedly been criticized by segments of the Turkish media in the days leading up to the concert for being anti-Turkish in his stance on the Cyprus issue and the Kurdish dispute in Turkey.

Cyprus is divided into a Greek Cypriot south represented by the internationally recognized government and a Turkish Cypriot north recognized only by Ankara. The two sides agreed a year ago to start negotiations toward eventual reunification, but there has been little activity.

"Certain groups intensified the situation by publishing inaccurate information which could have led to this development," Dalaras told a Greek TV station.

Senturk said the decision was not politically motivated.

Greek media reported the concert was canceled by the Istanbul prefecture on the grounds that the archaeological authorities responsible for the site did not grant permission. "These are just excuses," Foreign Ministry spokesman Giorgos Koumountsakos said late Saturday.

"He is an internationally acclaimed artist, especially liked in Turkey, and the decision to cancel his performance raises questions," he said.

Elina (ekostel) found that the website of publishing company Kastaniotis announces, among the new volumes due to be published in its "Biography - Testimony" («Biografies-Martyries») series, a volume by Thanassis Niarchos on Giorgos Dalaras.

(If you are wondering where you heard the name 'Niarchos', it could be in the ERT radio evening for Manos Eleftheriou, to which he gave a lovely contribution).

No publication date is given.

Anyone who can think of a publisher who might be induced to publish an English translation is urgently requested to communicate with me.

From Kathimerini English edition 28.08.2007:

GEORGE DALARAS

TASSOULA EPTAKILI

Me ToNa Podi StAstra (Universal)

Back in 1987, when I was a student, I spent money from my very first pay packet earnt from offering private tutorials to a youngster from Nikaia in Piraeus to buy a cassette of George Dalarass Treloi kai Aggeloi so I could listen to it on an old Philips cassette player in my bedroom. In the years that followed, I went on to discover some of his older releases that included songs by legendary composers such as Apostolos Kaldaras, Stavros Kouyioumtzis, and Manos Loizos, as well as renditions of old rebetika songs the kind of music that makes you think about your own life as you relate with the music.

Just a few days ago, I got hold of this latest Dalaras release, which I have given many listens. Ive tried to understand why a vocalist with such a worthy past has come to be associated with melodies crafted primarily for mass appeal and pop simplicity, as highlighted by the questionable lyrics on the album. It makes you wonder about the objectives of hit songs these days. Is it all about turning them into ring-tones for mobile phones, ephemeral hits at shallow-minded clubs, background music for trash TV reports on the latest celebrity news from Myconos? Or maybe, the objective is to score a hit alongside some of the countrys younger pop stars. Most of Dalarass new songs will probably attain all these objectives. Meanwhile, I think Ill go look for that old cassette I was telling you about. Then I can listen to it as a memory of a bygone era. Both for me and him.

As far as I know, someone has to go at their offices with the old booklet and they will replace it with the new -corrected- booklet. My only objection is that, personally, I don't want to give them the old booklet!! It's collectible!! :);)

You know Anna I do remember reading this now

it was a while ago and yet the funny thing is or Irony I should say is that,

Yesterday I was with a fellow singer of mine I work with

and she was telling how much the music of today in Greece has evolved so commercialized vs. to what the past sweet sound recordings we had from way back when.

And she blames it upon the recording studio labels that do not allow any good composeres, lyrcists & singers to write like they use too.

Instead they borrow alot from the Midde East Countries and as long as the audience or people that buy in and suppor them, they will continue in this trend. Thus enabling all singers to sing at the same style of POP songs and have the same sound and voices to blend with no Unique characteristics whatsoever among them.

The minute they stop and people want new change, she feels there will be Good Music written and recorded again just like in the old days there was.

So I thought how an interesting analogy this is at the same time from the quote you gave us on that article written by someone else.

a kind of concert report

Two summer nights in the famous Athens Herodion Odeon Theatre

Hi Anna, the two concerts were "Otan symvie sta periks" on illegal

substances. This report about Ntalaras new sound systems is

too technical for me and I can only hope that with such "state-of-the-art"

equipment, we should expect a nice album in the coming months.

I definitely noticed the cameras... Maybe DVD?? :pity:

WOW

funny thing is I too agree with Alona

the new technical recording gear is too high tech for me too

We can only envision the quality once we hear them.

Then we can make comparisons.

Now if we only could have the 'old Dalaras' performing on this like he used too.

:pity::pity:

For those who don't know greek and are spoiling for reading matter in this highly greekified place:

Alona (aaz) has managed to get a written interview from Dalaras for her radio show & our forum. She let me have the fun of translating it, so: http://www.dalaras.com/forum/index.php?s=2...=16&t=3880&st=0

I also finished translating the long interview of Dalaras by Thanasis:

Little by little, the Pallas programme is getting prolongations: so far, until December 20th.

A rumour says it might run until January 18th, if the public keep coming.
