Posted January 7, 2002 · Report post Hi Everyone I'm in search for the lyrics to the song Xeimeroni, kai Vradiazi from Vassilis Tsitsanis Dalaras sang this song at the Olympiako Stadio back in 1983 and is on the video from 2 nights at the Olympic Stadium 1983. It is mentioned in many rebetika songs, but the censorship during the Metaxas years (1936...) and the civil war used to forbid to sing about it. I am asking because I think it isn't Yedikule was a famous prison in Istanbul,in old times (in the Ottoman Empire).And the word "Yedi" is also a Turkish word which means "seven"(I think this explains why you can't find it in your dictionaries ).Kule means "tower",so Yedikule can be translated to English as:"Seven Towers".This name was given to the prison because there are seven towers on it. In fact, the region where this prison is in Thessaloniki is called 'Eptapirgio' which is exactly coming from seven and tower. I confirm that for Istanbul and here is what my dictionary says: Γεντή Κουλέ (=Επταπύργιο) τουρκική ονομ. της ακρόπολης της Θεσσαλονίκης και του Επταπυργίου της Κων/πολης. that means '(=Eptapirgio) turkish name of the acropol of Thessaloniki and of Eptapirgio of Istanbul' However, the songs definately refer to the one of Thessaloniki. I didn't know that "yedi" meant seven in Turkish, but I knew about the meaning of "koule". The prison mentioned in many songs in which the singer was allowed to pronounce th terrible name is located in Thessaloniki. "Ta kastra tou Yedi Koule... Sti Thessaloniki..." Do you remember? And indeed, the web link you provided us with, Nikolas, seems to refer to the prison (ouzeri/alcohol are prisons too by the way)... See how everyone's knowledge is broadening in here! And we didn't write anything about the "Palamidi" and the "Bourtzi" By the way, do we have such horrible places in France - I mean prisons like the "Yedi Koule"? Posted February 6, 2002 · Report post The name of the Turkish version of "pente hronia dikasmenos",a song by Vangelis Papazoglou, (in A portrait,Ta Hromata Tou Hronou,Ta Tragoudia Mou,Live Recordings ) is "Yedikule".It has very similar lyrics with the Greek one and in the last part of Turkish version Istanbul is mentioned.That's why I was convinced that Yedikule ,referred in that song, was the one in Istanbul S Gursu Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I've just found this in Petropoulos' book about the rebetiko: « Όμως από την απελευθέρωση της Θεσσαλονίκης (1912) και εντεύθεν η τρομερή φυλακή είναι το περίφημο Γεντή-Κουλέ, το Επταπύργο της μακεδονικής πρωτεύουσας. » (Ilias Petropoulos, Rebetika Tragoudia, pp 14 & 15) But you must be right too, as Nikolas said. About Yendi Koule. On the cd included in the brochure of the Tsitsanis concert G.D. sings a song called "Πέρα στα κάστρα του Γεντί". The lyrics given in the brochure are in Tsitsanis' handwriting which makes it more interesting but unfortunately I have difficulties in reading Greek handwriting Who could provide me with the printed text, please ?
