Posted October 16, 2007 · Report post My Greek has gone far far away in my memory. I seem to miss out on a lot of words or just can't find the right translation. Can anyone help out? Thanks a lot!
Posted October 16, 2007 · Report post Winter has come and the population got crazy Running to buy new overcoats But even if my own has gotten old I wont spend my franc and I really dont care that much. And even if all the others are shivering from cold I'll be safe in your magnificent hug. And when our fireplace at home is cold Your hot kiss will warm me up. And even if our charcoal grill, my doll, will not be burning Ill be feeling warm on your bosom. The warmest heating comes from the kisses When we are embraced in sleep, my little doll. Therefore we wont need the lights Well have a pleasant and cozy life While going to bed at nine To keep away from the northern wind and chill

Posted October 16, 2007 · Report post Notes: 1. the lyrics sound more "explicit" in English than in Greek, mostly because in Greek the verbs that mean "to raise the temperature of" do not have the sexual connotation of "heat up" and even "warm up". 2. the not-very-elegant repetitions of, for example, "in your arms", are not a product of translation, they are in the original - it's not great poetry, it's a funny song. 3. the diminutives are always tricky. "Kouklitsa" is just affectionate. "Kosmakis" usually means "the ordinary humble people" - that is, the "target public" of rembetico songs. Consider that in 1945, when the song was first released, they are very poor indeed, and really do not have either warm coats or fuel.
