Νανούρισμα _||_ Lullaby (Loizos-Papadopoulos)

10 posts in this topic

Alona had the lovely idea of asking me to translate this diamond for her.

It's Lefteris Papadopoulos at his very best, so the translation comes nowhere near doing him justice...

Get out Θαλασογραφίες/Thalassografies to hear the breath-taking original sung by Mariza Koch, and get Charis Aleksiou's new album (live at Irodeio - hommage to Manos Loizos) to hear it come to life all over again from the beginning.

Μουσική: Μάνος Λοΐζος _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ Music: Manos Loizos

Θα κεντήσω, πάνω στου αλόγου σου τη σέλλα _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ I shall embroider, upon your horse's saddle,

Με διαμαντόπετρες σωρό _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ with a mass of diamonds,

του φεγγαριού το πήγαιν' έλα _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ the come-and-go of the moon

στο πελαγίσιο το νερό _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ across the water of the sea.

Αγόρι μου, αγόρι μου _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ My darling boy, my darling boy

αγόρι μου να σε χαρώ _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ my darling boy, let me have joy of you.

Θα κεντήσω στα ασημοπίστολά σου πλάι _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ I shall embroider by your silver pistols

της χελιδόνας το φτερό _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ the swallow's wing

κι ένα σταυρό να σε φυλάει _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ and a cross to guard you

τις νύχτες που σε καρτερώ _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ in the night when I lie waiting for you.

Αγόρι μου, αγόρι μου _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ My darling boy, my darling boy

αγόρι μου να σε χαρώ _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ my darling boy, let me have joy of you.

Θα κεντήσω πάνω στο δίκοπό σου λάζο _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ I shall embroider, upon your double-edged dagger,

το βλέμμα σου το καθαρό _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ that clear look of yours

αυτό το βλέμμα το γαλάζιο _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ out of your bright blue eyes

που δε χορταίνω να θωρώ _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ which I can never stare into long enough.

Αγόρι μου,αγόρι μου _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ My darling boy, my darling boy

αγόρι μου να σε χαρώ _|_ _|_ _||_ _|_ _|_ my darling boy, let me have joy of you.

Thank you so much Geeske, it is indeed a precious-stone!

Apart from Mariza Kox, there are the versions of Aliki Vougiouklaki and

Melina Kana ("Juke Box") to the same song.

Thank you,

Alona

Excellent! A superb idea to translate this jewel of a song!

I was so moved the first time I saw a video with Mariza Koch singing it that I felt compelled to translate the song in French.

However my efforts didnt give me satisfaction, particularly my translation of the expression να σε χαρώ and the very last verse.

Here it is (comments are welcomed !):

Btw Geeske there is a typing mistake in verse 9 which should read να σε φυλάει instead of φιλάει

Annemarie, I had precisely the same question about this line...

"αγόρι μου να σε χαρώ " - I wonder whether it is a mother singing

to her child or a lover to her beloved? Elsewhere I read a great

translation to the song allowing two possibilities:

"my boy, my boy, may I (magari) see you grow up"

or

"my love, my love, may I (magari) enjoy you"

I think it could fit both a mother and a lover song Alona.

I hesitated between "mon amour" and " mon garcon, mon enfant " but chose the second alternative probably because I'm a grandmother....

In both cases the translation of "να σε χαρώ" remains unsatisfactory...

Therefore this crib will return to its drawer until the next bout of excitement when I (or someone else) finds some French expression as good as Geeske let me have joy of you !

I've corrected the typo, thanks!

«Να σε χαρώ» is indeed difficult - I'll see if I can find something in French, Annette, as a small contribution to your otherwise excellent translation.

As for the αγόρι, I agree that the lyrics would fit both a baby and lover, but the music is a true lullaby, a cradle-song, so I translated that way.

Thank you :razz:

Yes, I hear it as a true lullaby too.

From what I have seen «Να σε χαρώ» frequently figures in the lyrics of such songs.

In the meantime I found the clip with Mariza Koch:

Enjoy and thanks again,

In his book

Τα τραγούδια γράφουν την ιστορία τους - p.160

2006 Εκδόσεις ΙΑΝΟΣ

ΙΑΝΟΣ Ο Μελωδός ISBN 960-7827-52-X

Lefteris Papadopoulos tells us that the song was written for his son Noth :
