Ίνα τι....||....To What End

4 posts in this topic

A few days ago, Alona asked me to take a look at the title song from Dimitris Lagios' posthumous album, Ίνα τι, that was released in 1992 a year after his death and suggest a translation. I thought I'd share my notes with you. As far as I can make out, there are three lines of verse, one repeated twice. The third is deconstructed to the point of making the voice (Dalaras) an additional instrument to the score as opposed to words one can follow. I think, that to find out what the third line is, I'd have to see the actual score. The words are David's from Psalm 2:

ἵνα τί ἐφρύαξαν ἔθνη καὶ λαοὶ ἐμελέτησαν κενά

To what end have nations become unruly and to what end do people pursue vain things?

You can find text for the rest of the Psalm here http://sepd.biblos.com/psalms/2.htm with links to translations in other languages.

Oh, and if anyone can help with the third line, please let me know.....

Many thanks to Kate for finding the rest of the words for me. Here's a link: http://dalaras.com/songs/symmetoxes/ina_ti/ina_ti.htm

The third line is not from Psalm 2 (which was why I was so confused). Its from John 19:30 - the crucifixion.

Here's the whole song, translated:

ἵνα τί ἐφρύαξαν ἔθνη καὶ λαοὶ ἐμελέτησαν κενά

To what end have nations become unruly and to what end do people pursue vain things?

καὶ κλίνας τὴν κεφαλὴν παρέδωκεν τὸ πνεῦμα.

And having turned his head, surrendered his spirit.
