Sing along with him songs that I was listening for years. I hope he'll come again and maybe with a special concert performing his classic songs from Loizos, Kougioumtzis, Kaldaras... How I long to hear them. And I hope maybe next time we'll have a chance to meet him in person after the concert and tell him how happy we are to see him "stin Poli." At last, was one of his first remarks to a wild, cheering crowd at İstanbuls traditional summer concert venue on a pleasant Saturday evening. George Dalaras, or simply Yorgos, as we all know and call him, was surprised and moved when he finally faced his devout followers and admirers. One could say everybody was there: prominent Turkish musicians; young fans; members of high society; intellectuals; Kurdish dissidents; diplomats; politicians such as Egemen Bağış, Turkeys chief EU negotiator; and Turks from Greeces Western Thrace region. The concert ended years of vicious campaigning against this wonderful singer, the golden voice of sorrow and hope in this part of the world -- certainly a musician of the highest caliber, of world class, placed among Sting, Caetano Veloso, Pino Daniele, Salif Keita and Youssou NDour. His hope was to play in Turkey, where, like many Greeks, he has his roots. His grandparents came from the vicinity of İzmir -- then Smyrna -- and the roots of his music are certainly inseparable from the Aegean folk tradition. Deeply engaged in politics, and highly suspicious of Turkeys painful struggle to shake off its military tutelage, Dalaras previously struggled with the dilemma of appearing here, whereas many of his colleagues, including Haris Alexiou, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Vassilis Saleas, Savina Yannatou, Mikis Theodorakis, etc., visited Turkeys venues, to great welcome. He chose to stay away, even when joint friendship projects between renowned Greek and Turkish musicians developed. Not long ago, his mood changed. It was the post earthquake policy era, when Greece came closer to Turkey, which became more visible with its struggle for change and reform. But, when he felt ready, Turkish nationalists blocked it. Let us read what Wikipedia tells us about the sad incident three years ago: Dalaras had been scheduled to perform a concert on the closing night of the second International Orthodox Youth Conference held in İstanbul from July 11 to 15, 2007. The event, organized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, had drawn the ire of the Turkish press and Turkish nationalist politicians who filed complaints to the İstanbul Governors Office to revoke the license for the concert it had issued, and the concert was abruptly cancelled by the Turkish authorities of the İstanbul Governors Office on the grounds that the countrys Archaeological Service did not permit the use of the planned venue, the 15th-century Rumeli Hisarı castle. The site had previously been used for international theater festivals and for an international dance festival, until its use was prohibited by the Archaeological Service. The last-minute cancellation of the concert attracted strong media coverage and criticism in neighboring Greece. The campaign to block his appearance was led by an ultranationalist and influential opinion writer who was with the Hürriyet daily at the time, and it was primarily Dalaras himself who felt disappointed, as well as his fans. The cancellation was indeed a scandal. Those times are now over. When I met him after almost three hours of music, performed in its perfection with a 15-man band, his relief and joy were visible. As he watched the Golden Horn from the restaurant we were in, he agreed with me that it was indeed a new beginning. We talked at length about politics and the ordeal Turkey has been going through and agreed to be hopeful about the future. I was struck by his profound reading and analysis of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and where Turkey is actually heading. I conveyed to him my expectations about what artists like him can do to change the mindset of Greeks about Turks from negative to positive. How Dalaras feels and acts about Turkey counts. He is a national hero, a cultural landmark, a symbol of freedom, pride and celebration. My sense of hope of seeing him here, at last, in Turkey stemmed from the fact that an artist of enormous popularity like him can move mountains, in order to set his people into the correct mood. Today, many Greeks are fearful of Turkey and of Turks. They perceive their eastern neighbor as a threat and dread the possibility of seeing their islands in the Aegean Sea invaded. Many Greek politicians -- excluding George Papandreou -- thrive on that fear; the Greek media feed those sentiments constantly. The more Dalaras notices that these fears are unfounded, that todays Turks are overwhelmingly globalist, that they share the same values on democracy and freedom, his domestic message and his choices of going further with artistic projects with Turkish musicians, the easier it will be to change his countrymens perceptions and concerns. He knows the value of living in a democracy. He strikes a chord with his Turkish and Kurdish colleagues, who like him had to go through censorship and suppression to sing freely. On a magic Saturday night, when this fantastic musician shared some of his vast repertoire (coming from 70 or so records that mark his career), with enormous concentration and devotion, his personal history connected with that of his father (Loukas Daralas, a rembetiko musician) and his ancestors. Thank you so much Δεν χρειάζεται να πω ότι συμμερίζομαι απόλυτα τις εντυπώσεις που έγραψαν ήδη ο Makis και ο Sarper, αποθανάτισε η Anna στις φωτογραφίες της και συγκέντρωσε στα διάφορα ρεπορτάζ η Ekostel. Ήταν μια βραδιά απίθανη. Μια συναυλία μοναδική. Τεχνικά άψογη. Μουσικά καταπληκτική. Με τη διάθεση όλων εξαιρετική. Ήταν η μια βραδιά μιας εβδομάδας που έβρεχε κάθε μέρα, και, ομολογώ, πως μετά τις βροχές του περασμένου Σεπτεμβρίου είχα πολύ μεγάλη αγωνία μήπως βρέξει, αν και ήμουν σίγουρα από όσα είχα ακούσει από φίλους Τούρκους για το πόσο πολύ περίμεναν αυτή τη συναυλία, ότι ακόμη και αν έβρεχε δεν θα έφευγε κανείς. Όμως ο καιρός δεν μας απογοήτευσε. Ήταν μια πολύ γλυκειά βραδιά σε ένα πολύ ωραίο και λειτουργικό ανοικτό θέατρο χωρητικότητας 5000 περίπου ανθρώπων στο κέντρο της Κωνσταντινούπολης. Ο χώρος γέμισε από νωρίς. Όταν άρχισε η συναυλία οι άνθρωποι καθόταν παντού, όχι μονο στις θέσεις, αλλά και στίς σκάλες και τους διαδρόμους. Κρεμόταν κυριολεκτικά στο επάνω τμήμα του θεάτρου. Η ασφάλεια διακριτική, το ίδιο και όσοι πουλούσαν νερά και το τελευταίο cd του Γ. Νταλάρα. Περνούσαν χωρίς να ενοχλούν. Οι περισσότεροι ήταν βέβαια Τούρκοι, αλλά υπήρχαν και αρκετοί Έλληνες ομογενείς. Η ατμόσφαιρα φαινόταν εξαρχής πολύ ζεστή και φιλική. Το χειροκρότημα στην αρχή ήταν εξαιρετικά εγκάρδιο και παρατεταμένο, τόσο που φάνηκε να εντυπωσιάζεται και ο ίδιος ο Γ. Νταλάρας. Η χαρά και η συγκίνησή του φάνηκαν στον χαιρετισμό του. ’ρχισε με ένα «Επιτέλους» στα ελληνικά και συνέχισε στα αγγλικά. «Είναι φανταστικό, απίθανο. Σας ευχαριστώ που ήρθατε». Ξανά ζεστό χειροκρότημα, ενώ ο κόσμος φώναζε στα αγγλικά: «Καλώς ήρθες». Και συνέχισε λέγοντας ότι περίμενε πολύ καιρό γι᾽ αυτή την πρόσκληση. Τα τραγούδια του α´ μέρους ήταν όμοια με αυτά των προηγούμενων συναυλιών του Encore tour (τα είδατε σε όσα έγραψε ο Makis και στο «επίσημο» πρόγραμμα της ’ννας). Το χειροκρότημα ήταν πάντα δυνατό. Θερμό το χειροκρότημα και για το Θεός αν είναι που είπε η Δέσποινα Ολυμπίου από τις πρώτες κιόλας συλλαβές. Πριν αρχίσει το «Την πόρτα ανοίγω» θύμισε στο κοινό ότι είναι του Μίκη Θεοδωράκη. Δυνατό το χειροκρότημα και στο «’σπρο περιστέρι». Στα «Παραπονεμένα λόγια» και στο «Όλα καλά κι όλα ωραία» κάλεσε τον κόσμο να τραγουδήσει μαζί του το ρεφραίν (έλα, παιδιά) και ο κόσμος ανταποκρίθηκε, συνοδεύοντας τη μουσική χτυπώντας ρυθμικά τα χέρια. Το ίδιος συνέβη και στο «Πεπρωμένο». Από το «Έγινες πουλί» είχε ήδη ζεσταθεί πολύ η ατμόσφαιρα και ο κόσμος ήταν όλο και πιο εκδηλωτικός. Πολλοί σχεδόν χόρευαν στις θέσεις τους, μερικοί σηκώθηκαν κιόλας. Εξαιρετικά εντυπωσιακό ήταν πάντως όταν, ενώ τραγουδούσε ο Τζουγανάκης, μπήκε ο Γ. Νταλάρας στη σκηνή, τον πλησίασε και του έδωσε συγχαρητήρια, και στη συνέχεια κάθησε και τον άκουσε επιδοκιμάζοντας και χειροκροτώντας. Όταν τελείωσε ο Τζουγανάκης, ο κόσμος χειροκρότησε και τους δύο πολύ δυνατά και άρχισε να φωνάζει τίτλους τραγουδιών. Τότε Γ. Νταλάρας απευθυνόμενος στον κόσμο είπε «επιτρέψτε μου να σας πω ένα δικό σας τραγούδι αλλά με ελληνικούς στίχους. Μόλις ακούστηκαν οι πρώτες νότες από το Μοιρολόι όλο το θέατρο ξέσπασε σε χειροκρο¬τήματα. Η ερμηνεία μοναδική, γλυκειά και αισθαντική. Προς το τέλος προσκάλεσε τον κόσμο να τραγουδήσει στα τουρκικά. Συγκινητική στιγμή, να τραγουδούν όλοι μέσα στο θέατρο. Η ικανοποίηση ήταν έκδηλη στο πρόσωπό του. Και έκλεισε με την τελευταία στροφή στα ελληνικά και τις επευφημίες του πλήθους στις οποίες απάντησε λέγοντας ότι ξέρει πως οι Τούρκοι είναι πολύ καλοί τραγουδιστές. Ακολούθησε το μοναδικό Leilimlei με μια καταπληκτική κορώνα στο τέλος που χειροκροτήθηκε θερμά. Είχε έρθει η ώρα να καλέσει τον Ζ. Λιβανελί που βρισκόταν στις κερκίδες να ανεβεί στη σκηνή. Η υποδοχή του από το κοινό συγκλονιστική. Το ντουέτο του με το «Σαν το μετανάστη» ξεσήκωσε τους πάντες. Οι επευφημίες και για τους δύο που αγκαλιά¬σθηκαν ήταν τόσο παρατεταμένες που κάλυψαν τα λόγια του Γ. Νταλάρα για το επόμενο τραγούδι. Είπε κάτι (δεν το άκουσα πολύ καλά) σαν: πέρασαν πάνω από 30 χρόνια για να τραγουδηθεί εδώ (στην Κωνσταντινούπολη) το επόμενο τραγούδι μπροστά σε Έλληνες και Τούρκους. Ήταν το «Μες του Βοσπόρου τα στενά», για το οποίο στο τέλος είπε αυτό που ανέφερε και ο Sarper σχετικά με τη μετάφραση του στα Ελληνικά (Ρωτήστε όσους καταλαβαίνουν ελληνικά ανάμεσά σας για τους στίχους. Είναι πολύ σημαντικοί για όλους μας. Την επόμενη φορά θα έχουμε και μετάφραση). Ο κόσμος άρχισε πάλι να φωνάζει τίτλους τραγουδιών, Γιώργο κά. Ακολούθησε το Δύο παληκάρια απ᾽το Αϊβαλί με τη Δέσποινα Ολυμπίου, το Φέρτε μου νερό. Στους Ζεϊμπέκηδες ο κόσμος συμμετείχε και πάλι. Στο τέλος όλο το θέατρο χειροκροτούσε όρθιο για ώρα μέχρι που ο Γ. Νταλάρας ξαναβγήκε και λέγοντας «πάμε, παιδιά» άρχισε να παίζει την Ευδοκία και συνέχισε με το Μπαχτσέ τσιφλίκι. Η ατμόσφαιρα ήταν ενθουσιώδης και κάτω από τα επιφωνήματα και τα χειροκροτήματα συνέχισε με τα υπόλοιπα και βγήκε και για τρίτη φορά (όπως είδατε ήδη στη λίστα των τραγουδιών του Makis). Η υποδοχή του κοινού ήταν κάτι παραπάνω από ζεστή και συγκινητική. Η συγκίνηση διακρινόταν και στη φωνή και στην έκφραση του προσώπου. Ήταν στιγμές που τον έβλεπες να σταματά να παίζει την κιθάρα που κρατούσε και να αφοσιώνεται στο τραγούδι που έλεγε κοιτάζοντας προς το κοινό. Ήταν μια απίστευτη βραδιά να βλέπει κανείς τόσο διαφορετικούς ανθρώπους να βρίσκονται μέσα στο ανοικτό θέατρο και να χειροκροτούν όρθιοι για πολλή ώρα τον Γ. Νταλάρα και όλους τους μουσικούς. Ήταν απίστευτο να βλέπει κανείς πόσος κόσμος φωτογράφιζε και βιντεοσκοπούσε τραγούδια. Όλοι μοιραζόμασταν τα ίδια συναισθήματα για την μεγάλη επιτυχία και τη χαρά που επιτέλους έγινε αυτό που περίμεναν πολλοί τόσα χρόνια και που τόσο άδικα είχε ακυρωθεί πριν από τρία χρόνια. Προσωπικά νιώθω πολύ τυχερή που βρέθηκα σε αυτή τη συναυλία και πολύ περισσότερο που εκπληρώθηκε με ένα μυστήριο τρόπο η ευχή μου: να έρθει ο Γ. Νταλάρας στην Κωνσταντινούπολη το διάστημα που θα ήμουν εκεί!! Οι ευχαριστίες και τα συγχαρητήρια για την εξαίσια συναυλία και βραδιά ανήκουν σε όλους τους μουσικούς που έδωσαν την ψυχή τους και περισσότερο στον ίδιο τον Γ. Νταλάρα. Τα μικρά αποσπάσματα που ανέβασα ελπίζω δίνουν σε όσους δεν βρέθηκαν μια ιδέα από το τι ζήσαμε αυτή την αλησμόνητη βραδιά!
