Posted November 15, 2010 · Report post http://www.greeknewsonline.com/?p=14010&ut...28Greek+News%29 Dalaras Concert for Archangel Michael School November 15, 2010 by Greek News New York.- By Vicki James Yiannias At Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Avery Fisher Hall in New York on November 12, an unusual fundraising event featured Greek music giant George Dalaras, who performed gratis to benefit the completion of the Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Churchs new Cultural & Education Center in Port Washington, NY. The Benefit Concert in Celebration of Hellenism and the Hellenic Thread in the Tapestry of American Culture featured the world premiere of Christos Hatziss CREDO (Pistevo, based on the Nicene Creed) performed by Mr. Dalaras and the CityMusic Cleveland Orchestra conducted by European conductor Alexandre Myrat. In the second half of the concert Dalaras performed songs which, he noted at the November 8 press conference hosted by Press Consul Polyxeni Mastroperrou at the Greek Press Office, he began performing approximately 15-16 years ago with orchestral accompaniment. Surprisingly, the first song among these, he said, was a song from the Occupation by the great Vasilis Tsitsanis). Mr. Dalaras, who was accompanied by composer Christos Hatzis, emphasized that he considered it a great honor to be asked to participate in this special musical performance, to assist in the churchs fundraising efforts. He is particularly happy, as well as touched, said Dalaras, that his close friend, the superb composer, Christos Hatzis, had him in mind when he wrote CREDO, and it is a particular honor to perform the compositions premier. As well, Mr. Dalaras praised the CityMusic Cleveland Orchestra for its activist approach, its new way of going beyond the familiar, expected symphony orchestra presentation. Mr. Kostas Zachariadis, one of the churchs 20-member concert committee, told reporters that a year and a half ago, when discussions around a fundraising concert began, it seemed that Mr. Dalaras was an obvious choice for the best performer to help raise funds for a school. An enormous thank you to Mr. Dalaras and Mr. Hatziswithout these artists I dont believe we could have had a fundraising concert. It is to his honor and I personally thank Mr. Dalaras for his sensitivity in sacrificing his time and accepting to come to America gratis, to Lincoln Center, with Mr. Hatzis and Mr. Myrat to help us reach our goal of completing the Center. As of now, he said, the project is approximately 80% completed. It had been noted by some, said Zachariadis, that the ticket price for the concert was high, however, he explained, We decided to begin the tickets prices at 200.00 based solely on the fact that we need funds to complete the building project. This concert is for the completion of the Cultural & Education Center, and if the artists were paid to appear nothing would have remain for the project, so I thank all concerned profusely, and I believe that on Friday night there will not be one empty seat at Lincoln Center. A concert as a fundraiser is unusual, but not unique, Father Dennis Strouzas, Protopresbyter of Archangel Michael Church told the GN, noting that the inspiration for the concert was the St. Catherine churchs very successful benefit featuring Haris Alexiou a couple of years ago in Braintree, MA. As Archangel Michael does not have a Greek festival, the idea began to resonate with the community, and it all just kind of fell together, said Father Dennis, We contacted Mr. Dalaras and in the course of the conversation asked if he would defer his fee, and he was very gracious and kind to accept. I like to participate in the projects of those with whom I share common goals, and I like it very much when my music and my everyday life are following the same path, said Mr. Dalaras, noting that a project like this is not an easy undertaking and requires many people and a great deal of work. He and Mr. Hatzis spoke about the importance of the teaching of the Greek language to the next generation. Mr. Dalaras talked about the great personal significance of the concert for him, saying that when discussions began with the presenters of the concert, the performance plans took a turn that made him additionally enthusiastic about supporting the project because it provided him the opportunity to perform with a symphony orchestra, which in Greece is usually not possible. During the several decades of my singing career the public knows only one part of my work, my recordings and the periods during which I have sung popular songsin large or small venues where people go to have funto be entertained on one particular waybut that is not the only course for the artist. Outside of Greece there isnt an opportunity for concerts like those at the Athens Megaron or at certain other theatres, for example, where entire musical works can be mounted, but only at great expense and with a great many people. He noted that Americans havent had the opportunity to hear the work of composers like Theodorakis, Spanos, Kougioumtzis, Moutsis, Hadjidakis, performed by a symphony orchestra, You have heard recordings but not live performances, so this performance offers me a new point of contact with the audience. It is very significant for people who love Tsitsanis, Theodorakis, Kougioutzis to hear all those very simple songs played with a different sound that infuses the music with new meaning, one that will command a sense of respect, he said. This will expand its audience as well as drawing a new generation of enthusiasts. An interview with Mr. Hatzis will follow in an upcoming issue.
