Cyprus songs

24 posts in this topic

I strongly believe that all songs for Cyprus must be

translated. So here we go... Firstly the ones from the CD "Es

gin enalian Kypron" or "Ες γην ενάλιαν Κύπρον" (In the marine

land of Cyprus). 1992.

1)YOU THOUGHT WRONGLY

Music: Mixalis Christodoulidis

Lyrics: Theodosis Pieridis

My voice leave the careless lyrics

control your inebriation and hold your flame.

Τie, in pairs, the echo with the sound

make your steps solid, walk a straigh road.

Α loud-voiced hymn may take you in his horse

that demands dexterity and a good bridle.

And let them not say that a song like this does not fit

in a such dark hour that suffocates your chest.

I speak the one thing that stays and the only one that will be changing

always for the best, when the nightmare will leave.

Βecause they will leave! Τhink that they have already begun...

Βut everything else will stay and it's going to be ours.

No, τhis land does not want you, she doesn't know you!

Everything here is ours! Because from each stone

from the ground, from the tree, the water and the wind

our body to be created has taken a small bit.

Our soul has taken a breath from each one.

Everything here is ours -but to you everything is strange.

Because you are foreigners. And no matter how many palms you are holding

this land is cannot be sold, you cannot become friends with her!

The country is a mother, she has a memory - she remembers

from her sainted breast which lips were nursed.

And our sweet Cyprus was, is, will remain

for her children a mother, but for you always strange.

You thought wrongly with your minds, merchants

you cannot measure a country, nor freedom with the yardstick!

And even if the land is small, it wants and it can

eat the irremovable rock with the nail.

This thirst does not quench, this fight does not stop,

even if a thousand years pass, we don't die slaves.

2)  RETURN

Music: Mixalis Christodoulidis

Lyrics: Niki Katsaouni

Day by day I walk around

and behind my footsteps are vanished

my land is gone lost

An old house by the beach

my city (is) an old memory

the lands are leaving like birds

Night the night does not end

my city (is) a lost mother

a hug that waits for me

When I hear the matins bells

poor ruined chapels

birds left orphans trapped

Time my time I count

days (you are) wounds that hurt me

nights (you are) (sword)points that penetrate me

A city and a house and a coast

worlds of glass that were cracked

they left my soul in slivers

I'll leave for one day to see

cities ancient mothers

night to glow like days

A city and a home and a coast

friends and laughters from kids

and love again in the heart

3) A LOVE DIVIDED IN TWO

Music: Mixalis Christodoulidis

Lyrics: Mixalis Ganas

A haunted island-ship

so much ours as much it is foreign

so much yours as much it is mine

that cannot be divided my love

So much ours and of the world

like the smell of a cut mint

but in the night (it is) mostly ours

like our secret engagement

So much and so few

that lessens little by little

So much and so few

that it superfluous as soon as I leave

and like a love divided in two

that awaits only for a miracle

4) ONE SATURDAY

Music: Mixalis Christodoulidis

Lyrics: Mixalis Kakogiannis

One Saturday the dawn

the scream begun

from Keryneia and reached

Pontos and Smyrni

The seas were bleeding

and the skys were filled

with red halfmoons

wounds that were not healed

And the graves were cracked

the trees were on their knees

Christ, how come so many crimes

your eyes bared to watch

and yet didn't stop them

5) IN THE LAND THAT GAVE US BIRTH

Music: Mixalis Christodoulidis

Lyrics: Mixalis Kakogiannis

We will stand in the land that gave us birth

like the trees, that the wind fights

that are hitten by storms, but they remain still

preparing the fruit in their branches

We will stand in the land that gave us birth

with the memory of those that passed

the love for those that will come

and the divine peace in our soul

6) REFUGEES

Music: Mixalis Christodoulidis

Lyrics: Anthos Lykaugis

They fold the bitter dream

they cover it with the stone

they lift and sigh

in their arms the time

The eyes are dry and the sob

depicted in the mouth

in the enslaved ground

fire and destruction

They cross the wounded

arms of the uprooting

in their chest knifes

and the destiny of the loss

Bented and the breath is a scream

it brokes the heart

their night (is) a languor

-it brokes the heart

and their day (is) a wound

In their wide chests

they count their rage

in their bitter country

they forgot the heart

My uprooted generation

as I think of you

I'm in pain and I curse

the unfair killer

7) AMMOXOSTOS

Music: Mixalis Christodoulidis

Lyrics: Niki Katsaouni

Marine (is) your breast

and (there are) flowers in your armpits

and how you smelt very fresh

in the first raindrops

A city where we played as children

in your wide apron

with fish and lemmon-flowers

drop your eyes

Close your doors

and wait for us

and with smells and beauties

don't sprinkle the foreigner

Lock close fold

the grief in the lips

hide in the sand Ammohostos

like a rare shell

And we, (we are) birds that were sent away

on August by your enemies

know (it) that we will return

faithful to your spring

Well, that's all for today... I'll go one later... :D

 NIki

This is really great of you to post the lyrics to these wonderful songs.

If you've seen my topic on "Songs for Cyprus"

You will see why these songs are so significant in meaning that they have to be understood well in order to appreciate them.

Thank you so much for doing this.

I've always wanted to know what is being interpreted from the Greek & Cypriot words.

If I ever need a song translated for me,

I know I have great pals in here to ask such as yourself,

  Geeske, Anna, & Soc.

  Thanks again

And I will help you with the musical translation parts

    christo :D

Christo, very kind you mentioned me, but especially for translations would be better to forget me!!

And concerning the songs of Cyprus, Niki, it's true. We, Nongreeks, really need translations to get the whole meaning and importance of it.

Btw. I'm going to Cyprus next Thursday!

Ach Franz!

Why do you think I'm posting my travelplans at this website? I hope Dalaras reads it and comes, and does a concert!!

Ps. I'm there only for 1 week!

Niki,  the first song is my favorite Cyprus song and I've written it again below with some suggestions as some of the English is a bit  - well anyway read it and see what you think (please don't take any offense)

My voice abandon the carefree lyrics

control your drunkeness and hold your passion.

Grasp now, couple echo with sound

make your steps solid, walk a straight road.

A loud hymn may take you to his horse

which demands dexterity and good restraint.

And let them not say that such a song doesn't suit

such a dark hour that suffocates your chest.

I speak the one thing that remains and the only one that will change

always for the better, when the nightmare will go away.

Because they will leave! Think that they have already begun...

But everything else will remain and ours it will be.

No, this land does not want you, it doesn't know you!

Everything here is ours! What if from every stone

from the ground, from the tree, the water and the wind

is taken a small peice to create our body.

Our soul has taken a breath from each one.

Everything here is ours - but for you all is foreign.

Because you are foreigners.  And no matter how many palms you hold

this land cannot be betrayed, you cannot our friends become!

The country is a mother, she has a memory - she remembers

from her sainted breast which lips were nursed.

And our sweet Cyprus was, is, will remain

for her children a mother, but for you always foreign.

You calculated wrongly in your minds, merchants

you can't measure a country, freedom with a yardstick!

And even if the land is small, it wants and it must

dig the immovable rock with the claw.

This thirst is not quenched, this fight does not stop,

even if a thousand years pass, we won't die slaves.

Lynne, are you kidding me? Offended?  :D Why would I be?  :D  In fact I need all the help I can get, as these songs are quite difficult sometimes because of their subject and the way they are written, they are like poems... Well, some of them are poems... So you are all welcomed! :D

Ok here are some more.

2)  RETURN

Day by day I wander around

but my footsteps behind me are obliterated (means wiped out)

my land has been lost

An old house by the beach

my town, an old memory

the places leaving like birds

Night the night doesn't end

my town, a lost mother

a hug that waits for me

When I hear the matin bells

pour ruined chapels

orphan birds left trapped

Time, my time I count

days, wounds that hurt me

nights, points that pierce me

Town, house and seashore

glass worlds that were cracked

they left my soul in slivers

I'll live to face a day

towns, ancient mothers

nights to shine like days

Town, house and seashore

friends and laughter from children

and love in the heart again.

3)  A LOVE DIVIDED IN TWO

A haunted island-ship

so much ours, so much foreign

so much yours, so much mine

that cannot be divided by love

So much ours and of the world

like the smell of cut mint

but in the night, mostly ours

like our secret engagement

So much and so little

that diminished bit by bit

So much and so little

that it is left over, just a little

and like a live divided in two

that only awaits a miracle.

5)  IN THE LAND THAT GAVE US BIRTH

We will stand in the land that gave us birth

like the trees, that the wind fights

that are beaten by storms but are unshakeable

preparing fruit in their branches

We will stand in the land that gave us birth

with the memory of those that passed on

the love of those that will follow

and the divine peace in our soul

7)   AMMOCHOSTOS

Marine, your breast (don't like this but can't find anything else)

and flowers under your arms (armpits is not a nice word!)

and how you smelt so fresh

in the first raindrops

A town where we played as children

in your wide apron

with fish and lemon groves

lower your eyes

Close your gates

and wait for us

and with aroma and beauty

don't sprinkle the foreigners (these two lines should actually be reversed to make it correct English)

Fasten, lock, fold up

grievance from lips

hide in the sand Ammochostos

like a rare shell

And we, birds that were banished

in August by your enemies

know that we will return

faithful in your spingtime

Thats all for now.  I have changed all the word City to read Town as in Cyprus they are all towns we only have one city and its sounds more correct when the songs relate to Cyprus.

Great job Niki and Lynne!

Do you recall what Dalaras writes in the album 'Es gin enalin Kipron', about a question he was asked by a little girl?

Are you kidding me? How can you ever forget that?

He wrote: "...I dedicate my song [...] and to the 8 years old little girl that shoked me some time ago asking me: "When are we going back?" "

It's also in Paylos's article...

May I ask a favour?

Could you post that sentence again, the one you quoted, but in the original Greek, please? (my imagination will supply the sound of his voice).

Talking about remembering things... There are 3 songs left here... Let's go!

WE ARE GREEKS

It's not the first time that you betray us.

You 've done it again years ago in other centuries,

when you sold us out to the Perses.

And yet we lived. We went through slavery and ????

we did it against the rain and the grasshopper.

We are Greeks. We do not await for anything,

now you threw us in the Turks,

the blood watered the land

and they put heavy chains on Pentadaxtylos.

We are Greeks. We do not await for anything,

from Athens, nothing. We are Greeks,

Greeks of the bitter weather

and the dissapointment.

In the heart of the sea,

in the cross of the orizon,

a shout and a cry my country.

We stay awake in this corner, in the end of the sea

on our small country.

Our voice -old centuries that are not lost.

Our dream -centuries that will come.

We stay awake in this corner and fight.

The hope is being sharpened in faith.

I'm not sure how much I like this song, but anyway, a few small corrections:

...when you sold us out to the Persians.

And yet we lived. We went through slavery and piracy...

(κουρσάρος, from the French "corsaire" - or the Italian equivalent; "la course" was a form of "legalized" piracy, the pirate having official permission from the government of his country to take ships from countrys they were at war with).

...We are Greeks. We do not expect anything,

now you threw us to the Turks, ...

Someone mentionned that Dalaras will play the Cypriot national orchestra in London on 1 december. So I went looking for this dim;y-remembered topic. Then thought I'd better bring it up, in case anyone else wanted to know what they might (hopefully) be in for.

Thanks Geeske for bringing this up! Thanks Niki and Lynne for the translations! I'll study this while waiting on the 3rd of December.
