These are all songs I like (so much that I studied the lyrics - at least an hour apiece to make sense of them...), but I selected these more because they are appropriate to the story, than because they are top favourites. Many of my best beloved are not included. And of course there would have been many more appropriate songs, except that I don't know them yet...

I'd like to take this chance to say THANKS in a big way to you, all of you, who have been giving songs to me, in your many different ways - you know who you are! Your gifts are better than any gold.

I've been thinking of making a special cd with 'songs to listen to with the headphones, in bed, just before going to sleep'.

The title of the compilation might be:

The cover (I already have it): a postcard reproduction of the incredible drawing of a bat, made by Hans Holbein five hundred years ago.

The good news: in january, when I get the new computer, I will actually be able to make it.

The bad news: I don't have αερικο on cd

The not-news: by january, I will have found so many more songs to put on it, that it'll have to be a double.

  Ι left out rembetika and Tsitsani, not because I don't like them (I love them) but because I want a CD that will be only for these songs. So I'll be back...

Now that I am actually able to burn compilations... how hard it is to decide!!!

A new idea occured to me the other day: a compilation cd with favorite songs, in the version by Dalaras AND a version by someone else.

The first examples that come to my mind: Aυγούστος by Dalaras and by Papazouglou; Θεός αν είναι by Dalaras and by Alexiou; Θεσσαλονίκη by Dalaras and by Katisimichas...

Even "The TV screen" next to "Το τραγούδι της βροχείς", why not?

Of course the other version has to be very good or it will disappear next to Dalaras'.

And I'm not sure it will work even so.

What to you think, and what songs would be good to put on it?

Yassou, Geeske, it's nice to see you so active;

 I can agree with the idea of the compilation, and with your newest idea, Geeske, but you are all hopeless, and me too!

 It would be a new "Mousiko kouti", so just about 10 CD's or sth like that! Thanks to Micki, who wrote some words like "why this one song chosen".

My first choice is:

1. Mi mou thimoneis, matia mou

2. Pou einai ta chronia

(the first songs I heard as a child of 12 with the Greek music, I can't imagine the time before this "Big bang" and my parents too)

3. Kapion allon filises sto stoma

4. Tha erthis pali, tha erthis

5. Issoun Theos

6. Tis makrines tis thalasses, A MUST

(all the ballads where the special lyric quality of Giorgos' voice is shown in the best way,I think)

7. Vammena kokkina mallia; after "Mi mou thimoneis" the best lullaby for me - the newer one

8. Exo enan kafene (one of the oldest Greek songs I know)

9. Kapou nichtoni or Vasanaki, vasanaki (simply: Stavros Kougioumtzis, an amazing composer of the best Dalaras' songs) As I was told in Iraklion this summer: "K. ekane Dalara", this is: "Kougioumtzis made Dalaras", and it is true:  don't forget the whole "Na'tane to 21"!!!! A classic in the best way, and for the Greeks too. After I bought this CD and told that to the old Kyrios Angelos from Crete, I heard: SO YOU KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT GREECE, AS WE DO. My heart is beating louder when I think about these words.  

And then "Otan anthizoun paschalies" is, S. Kougioumtzis, too....

To the last one a story: as I was an absolute beginner in Greek, January 2001, I got the CD "Israel Philharmonic",  I looked into a Spanish text, understood nothing and then I read simply the Greek version of this, understood,  said "a beautiful thing",  and  then realized that it was Greek, what I read - after 2 months of learning! I was weeping with joy then....

==So, Geeske, Micki, Niki and all of you, our goal to make a choice of Giorgos' 15 best songs is a bit hopeless.

We dare not forget: "Ta chromata tou chronou", especially Part 1 of this, which would be a comparison to our choices as the one of Giorgos Dalaras himself...

Ola kala kai ola orea, what would we do then? 1-2-3 CD's or just 10 for the new "Mousiko kouti"?.....

Well, you all, how could I have forgotten the two:

1. San palio sinema (the song for the most sunny moments of life, and the most sunny one of Giorgos Dalaras I know);

2. Ta vengalika sou matia; a song I am afraid of; the first one in my whole life who gave me two completely sleepless nights. The text and the instrumentation - last but not least the dark minor mode. And, somewhere, the version of "The ultimate collection" much better as this one from "The mousiko kouti".

So, my list would be of at least 17 numbers...

And, as G.D. himself gave two collections of about 40 songs every one (Ta chromata tou chronou and The ultimate collection), it would be good to think about the same, 2-3 CD, like, e.g. Stavros Kougioumtzis, Ta megala tragoudia. With 60 songs! But it would make possible the comparison of some voices, like in Geeske's suggestions.

By the way, Niki, I am glad to see in your choice almost the same titles;the ones  I have not in mine, I don't know simply!

This cd might be a good idea or not - I don't know, I think I want to try the experiment.

So, the candidates so far:

Geeske, I put that in the wrong topic I suppose, so I write it here as well. Anyway. I think you could put Ανόητες αγάπες, in which I think, Pix Lax and brothers katsimixas are a bit better than Dalaras.

As for Του ερωτα, it would definately be in, IF I had it. Which I don't.

I found Alexiou's version of Αχ χελιδόνη μου on the live cd this morning - maybe I might include it? What think? Again, not better than his - but maybe good enough to stand beside it? (And then there will be the problem of which version of his to include).

I have not heard Αχ χελιδόνη μου sung by Alexiou yet. But she has a strong voice, so I would put it in, next to Dalaras.

And Θεός αν είναι, no doubt, put it in, both versions.
