Posted March 9, 2002 · Report post Never heard Βαρβάκειο , never heard of Βαρβάκειο , and who in the world is Tsaousakis ?(sorry Francois, that's what happens when you mix with barbarians  ) But you are with us, Geeske, you are not like those Barbarians in Cavafy's poem. You are our favourite Barbarian... "Βαρβάκειο" is in the CD "50 chronia rebetiko tragoudi". Prodromos Tsaousakis is, together with Sotiria Bellou, Marika Ninou and Stratos Payioumtzis, one of the best interpreters of the songs of Vassilis Tsitsanis. He died in 1979. I also suggest a song with Stratos Payioumtzis: "Glykocharazoun ta vouna", in the CD "50 chronia rebetiko tragoudi" too. I don't know if Dalaras has sung any song interpreted by Marika Ninou I then suggest a song with Kazantzidis ("To pelago einai vathi"), one with Farandouri ("To yelasto paidi"), and one with Bithikotsis (there are plenty of them) + a Hadjidakis one with Mouskouri ("O Kyr' Antonis" for example). These are only suggestions of course...
Posted March 9, 2002 · Report post I have 50 χρόνια Ρεμπετικα - so I do have Βαρβάκειο after all - just didn't recognize the title! Sorry... To make amends I promise to play it at least three times today (such awful punishment :sarcasm: ) Francois, you really, really must make your own compilation! It's going to be a very interesting and varied one, and full of singers I don't know. And I make mine, and then we swap, ok? I would really like that... Btw, there's no way I'm having either Mouskouri or Farantouri on mine. Ssorry - objectively, I recognize they can sing well, but subjectively, I just don't seem to like them. On the other hand, if I could get my hands on the Hiotis/Linda version of Περασμένες μου αγάπες, that would go in at once - but I only have it on tape... Same for Piaf singing Omorfi poli... Wouldn't that sound great next to Bellou, too? Anyway, never mind, that cd is getting FAR too full, fast turning into a double.
Posted March 9, 2002 · Report post Yes, I must admit that Piaf next to Bellou and Dalaras would sound great... Don't you like Farantouri, Geeske? As far as Mouskouri is concerned, it is true that she "lost her voice" at the end of the 1970s, but her old versions of Hadjidakis' songs are so... well, I can't find my words... "Περασμένες μου αγάπες"... I don't have the CD (of course, it's very nice with Linda and Chiotis), but I can encode Piaf singing "Omorfi poli" into MP3 and send it to you if you like. I also suggest "Oloi oi rebetes tou dounia", the original Vamvakaris version...

Posted March 9, 2002 · Report post I was trying to find an appropriate title for this compilation. The only one I've come up with so far is Σε αλλές φονές but I'm not sure it's right (as in: grammatical, but also as in: good enough).

Posted March 12, 2002 · Report post On Melodia a minute ago: a sumptuous instrumental version of Omorfi Poli - IF (big big IF) I understood the man right, it's the one from the movie soundtrack it was composed for. I will get my hands on it some day and include in my next volume of this compilation. It's a funny thing about Theodorakis, sometimes I love a piece of his in one orchestration and hate it in another... And another funny thing (though maybe I'm wrong here) : he seems to be (almost) as good a Dalaras at practising widely different kinds of music, of orchestration, and at collaborating with unlikely people - but he doesn't get flamed for it as much as Dalaras, does he? I wonder why, maybe it's because he is a less modest, retiring sort of man?
Posted April 21, 2002 · Report post Με αλλές φωνές the compilation has turned into a double cd... And there is some room left on cd2, so: suggestions, anyone? For example, someone told me the other day that no other Greek singer dared to record Imitlerim. Is this true? How about not-Greek singers, because I've heard Bregovic do it live? Posted April 21, 2002 · Report post Geeske, that is not true. Imitlerim exists with another Greek singer's voice...

Posted April 22, 2002 · Report post Thanks, all! (except Nikolas of course, who is a tease and will get scratched one of these days ) I would love to include a Turkish version of Imitlerim, if if IF I had one. And I've heard a lot of good noises about that "Rembetiko" soundtrack, but never the record itself - something to look forward to :sarcasm: in some nebulous future... I definitely wanted Bithikotsis in there. I had put in his version of τα ματόκλαδα σου λάμβουν, actually . I don't have the Vamvakaris version, alas!!! Don't I wish I did... Που 'ναι τα χρόνια: now that is an excellent idea. Sarper, did you know how much I love that song, or was it just magic? I'd also like a few more women's voices in there. Any ideas? Arvanitaki and of course Dalaras from a concert in Xalkidiki (see above) Αργά είναι πια αργά with Stratos Dionysiou and of course Dalaras Do you need more? If, if, IF I can beg these songs off someone, I will include them. But I haven't got any of them yet (not even είναι αργά, since the tape died). Do you need more? Maybe the best is yet to come.
