I bought some months before the new (up to 2000) edition of the "Κατάλογος Ελληνικής Δισκογραφίας 1950 - 2000" of Petros Dragoumanos:

Καλώς τους is there all right: 1994

Σεργιάνι στον κόσμο has sold astoundingly for a record that old - hey, sales numbers then were in a different order of magnitude... remember?

i think that these numbers refer to the initial sales of the disc when it was first published as a LP or so ... For Example the sales of "Na' tane to 21" after the re-edition in CD in the early 90's are possibly not included.

As far as "Kalo Tous" is concerned, it has sales of 60,000 (it is in my list but i think that you didn't notice it !! :):D:D )

I think that before 1972 the albums were not awarded. The first album that became gold was MIKRA ASIA in 1972.This is the reason that George's previous albums were not awarded.Somewhere I was reading(I think in difono) that the album ''Mi milas kindinevei i Ellas'' has sold over 500.000 albums. Also the discs of George Dalaras - anofficial-are over 20 millions.

Some time ago, Theodorakis had the two thirds of records sales in Greece (as a composer), but I don't think we can compare singers and composers on that particular issue; anyway, for me, quality doesn't depend on the number of records that have been sold, and Theodorakis and GD are among the best in Greece, aren't they?

Let me give you an example Melissa. The equivalent to 10m albums in Greece, a number equal to the population of the country, would be 300m albums for the United States, or 60m for France or 60m for England

I agree with you, Francois, that quality does not depend on the sales. Also, it is a matter of personal taste.

Well, you know, Melissa, I don't particularly appreciate Bethoveen or The Rolling Stones for example, but I know they are quality artists, so, quality doesn't depend on personal taste. It depends on other criteria. :)

However, I don't understand why GD is not as well known as Theodorakis in North America, at least. (Or is GD better known? what do our American members have to tell us?)

Well, I think it is normal that Theodorakis should be more well-known than GD, not only in North America, but also in France and everywhere else. He is Greece's most important composer...

Ater all, Mozart is more well-known than his interpreters. Many people in France know Theodorakis, but very few would be able to remember the names of Farantouri, Bithikotsis or Dalaras, his interpreters.

From what I know, GD is known only to Greek communities. In the stores, you can't find his CDs (if you are very lucky, you may find one CD of The Portrait in the store). Maybe nobody promotes him (I try to do that every opportunity I get).

GD is not only known to Greek communities: In our main record store in Lille (Northern France, 1 000 000 inhabitants, 2000 Greeks), they always have between 10 or 15 different cds by him; but it is true that he still needs a lot of promotion.

I am amazed at one thing: each time Greek artists sing or play music here, tickets are usually sold out !!!:huh::D

You know, Melissa, Theodorakis is much more well-known in France than Dalaras!

I rarely order Greek Cds from the American or Canadian sites... It is true that they don't have many things... :)

The Greek sites (some of them) usually have the whole discography of GD.

For "To mousiko kouti", see:

http://www.greekbooks.gr/cd/showcd.asp?itemCode=037859

http://www.greekbooks.gr/

is the best site I have visited for Greek music. They have almost everything...

Where do you live, Melissa? They send CDs all over the world contrary to some Greek sites who don't even bother to answer when you order something...

Thanks for the tip Francois. I am in Canada. My problem is I don't know how to order in Greek, to enter the info they need. Do they have their site in English also? How long does it take usually for you to receive your orders?

Well, you have to learn the Greek alphabet to read the names of the singers, CD titles etc. Once you can read it, you don't need to write anything in Greek. Part of the instructions are in English*. The last time I ordered CDs was on a Wednesday, and I got them on the next Friday (Courrier, not usual post office).

* If you need help later, just e-mail me and I'll try to do my best to guide you.
