ELLOPIA

4 posts in this topic

The word Ellopia is unkown to me. I don't have a greek dictionary here wo I am in danger to be considered ignorance about my own language. I 've been thinking about it for a couple of days. I tried to find a friend who majored in Greek and I couldn't locate her. So I am taking the risk and I say that the word Ellopia does not exist. It is a composition of two words: Ελλάδα (Greece) and Ουτοπία (utopia).

For somebody who lives far away from his country this is a very touching song, that could answer many questions.

Ellopia

(music: Giorgos Andreou, Lyrics: Paraskeuas Karasoulos)

Those who were born here, they were always tortured

by an ancient fever, they named it "to get away"

their memory, like a worn cloth, hidden in a bag

they were traveling with it, they were getting old with it

Those who were born here, they got fooled by the stars,

by the sea smell, the rocks' cliffs

and their unrealized lust on the ruined castles,

gives birth to their kids every morning

(I omit the word "alafroiskiota" because I have no idea how to say that in english, "light-shadowed" would be a joke, and then how to explain it.....)

This is the sea I am struggling to deny,

to hurt the light I 've paid for,

to escape from my greek self,

and maybe at the end, I will meet Greece

Those who were born here, they will return some day

digging inside themselves they 'll find a new start

they will turn their face to the people and the sky

and they will find the journey's first cause (motive)

This is the sea.......

The kind of question I never forget.

The english word is "clairvoyant" - someone who has the ability to see the unseen.
