Lol, mon ami, you were right about one thing : it was indeed too early in the morning for you to think, coz it was not Sarper, but Socratis whom you agreed with :pity::pity::razz:

I was not thinking about Socrates, but about Charlie Chaplin in his famous speech from The Great Dictator. I am very glad that you told me about Socrates, Giorgaki...

So, thank you, Socrates, thank you, Chaplin, thank you, Sarper, thank you, Giorgos...:razz::razz:

Good, now we have a very interesting topic to talk about (other than Dalaras of course because any topic that has something to do with dalaras is by definition interesting).

So, hmmmm, the great capitalism. ENRON. The one that provides with the best service. Worldcom. The one that is efficient. Airport security. The one that takes care of its investors. XEROX. The one that is honest. Arthur Andersen. Ans the list goes on and on and on. And these are not isolated cases. These are the biggest corporations in the US the ones that enter or homes every day and storm us with commercials and provide us with things we need. And these are the ones that we know of. Because everyday we wake up we have a new one. And by now I 've lost count.

I have nothing against capitalism in its theoretical form because simply I do not know what it looks like. No country in the world has practiced capitalism the way the theory defines it in the words of Adam Smith or any other classical economist or even J. M. Keynes. I just like to see it in order to judge it. Because the thing I am seeing today is not capitalism. It 's something by far simpler: GREED. And the same argument goes about communism which in theory was something entirely different than what we saw. (The writings of Marx and Engels in no case produced the murderers and extremists we saw). So, dear friends, when you want to refer to a political system, refer to it in theoretical terms. If you want to refer to a country's politics refer to it by the name of the country, so we know what we are talking about.

And as far as wealth of information goes, when I want to be really informed I turn to National Public Radio, BBC, or ERT or TV5 and never, never to CNN or NBC the biggest propaganda makers. It takes 5 minutes to watch the news there and it turns your stomach upside down. If you are a thinking person.

:razz::razz::)

Αχ αυτοί οι μαθητές σου, σε έχουν κουράσει πάρα πολυ! :D:razz:

Francios, your answer was very predictable and that was the answer i expected from you..Spoken like a true socialist and liberal..I truly hoped for a better more intelectual answer than the one you give.Something other than the usual misinformed propaganda responce that i have heard for years that is wrong..

You say that 1/4 of the american children are hungry or starving. Not enough food or vitamins(WHAT?)...That number is exagerated and you probably got that number from your State owned television..That information is WRONG!! and no where near correct...

I was really hoping for a better answer ,something other than the usual socialist ,liberal propaganda!! Your answer was very predictable and i see exactly where your coming from...I dont share your views but offer to continue this thru e-mail if you wish. ..And for the final time, I am GREEK,born and lived there.Im not sure what difference that makes though in this debate.

So, since we do not agree on this i guess its better to stick to what we do agree on "DALARAS"....and his music....

Sarantiis, I see that you are well-fed with "the usual misinformed propaganda response that i have heard for years" from almost all the US media. Watch TV5 (the French news bulletins from FR2 and FR3), you will understand what a lot of us mean. Now, I'll post a nice Dalaras song I will listen to today thinking of all the victims of capitalism (and of the US) on our dear planet.

Francios, I guess we agree to Dissagree! So, lets move on and think DALARAS......

Yes, thinking of Dalaras, I am very impatient to listen to the new double CD... It won't be in Lille before July 15th... :)

I will:

1) buy the CD on July the 15th, then

2) send a 35 cheque (approximately the price of the CD here) to "Medecins sans frontieres" who will use it for the starving children, then

3) write a letter to Dalaras explaining the fact (not our converstion, of course)...

I want to say that avoiding subjects, closing topics etc, doesn't help. We can discuss everything here and the hotter the issue the more people are drawn to it. And this is what we want, right? More participation.

So, I do not mean to be a pain but since numbers were mentioned I would like tot inform both Francois and Sarantis directly from the source so they stop fighting about whose numbers are more onjective. According to the latest information from the Census Bureau 17% of children under 17 years of age live below the poverty limit in the US, and this is the national average. Of course the question arises as what is the poverty limit in the US. And the answer is (according again to the Census Bureau) that for a family of four, it is $17,000 (for the whole family). So, children who live in a family of 4, and this family makes 17,100 are not included in the above number. And Sarantis, knows better than anybody else, that it is impossible for a family to live on $17,000 a year. So, I think that Francois' estimate is probably low, since if we consider the real poverty limit the numbers get to be much higher.

Now, what I want to say is that things are not necessarily black or white, grey is a wonderful color as well. It is unfair for me to argue with people about enterprise corruption, isolated incidents or general trends, because of my background in economics, so let's leave that alone.

However as far as info goes, I h ave a wonderful example of the level of accuracy we are provided with, in this country. The following conversation took place in Brazil, when President Bush was meeting with the Brazilian President:

President Bush: "Really! You have blacks (meaning obviously black people) too!!!"

Brazilian president: (speechless)

National Security Advisor: (steps in, talks to the Brazilian President) "You have to understand that he is on a learning curve"

Brazilian President: "But.....I thought this was his area of expertees"

If this had happened in most countries it would be all over the news. Here it didn't make it ti Cnn, NBC or anywhere else. I heard it on the American National Public Radio.

My point is that, even today in the information age, what we get is limited and suited to the wishes of whoever is in power. I have several other incidents where information was flowing all over the world and none of our "free" networks informed us about because it was against their interests. They are both useful and mostky entertaining

Yes, Soc, but I truly wanted to avoid "civil" war inside our community...

Hristaki, I'll buy 2 CDs and give one of them to the main jail here in Lille where a lot of prisonners have never had the opportunity to listen to any good music.

Soc, what you wrote is very valuable indeed, thanks so much for the help and the information. :)

Francios, to answer your question.I never said i was a pianist and im not sure what that has to do with anything about this recent conversation?

Dear sarantiis, I know you never said you were a pianist; I just wanted to know, that's all, and it has nothing to do with anything about our recent conversation :):D

So,what are your hobbies?

I see you play the guitar... Very nice! :)

I have played the bouzouki since 1976. My main hobby and passion in life are the rebetika songs, some of which our beloved singer her has sung extremely well. My two other hobbies include writing poems and reading Shakespeare's plays. But have a look at my profile... and if you click on the link, wait for the photo to upload...

Francios, i already know this guy in New York.I have spoken to him several times on the phone..I have seen some of his work and am not very impressed...Dalaras' tsoura turned out nice though..As far as Bouzouki i would like soemthing much nicer than a average one...

Why don't you ask Diamantis Panaretos?

Btw, my name is Francois, not "Francios"...

:):D:D

Yes, I think it's the best thing to do... You know, my bouzouki is only average, it was not cheap, but not too expensive either. It has a nice and clear sound, and I prefer it to the so-called profesionnal one I had bought in Athens in 1980!
